What's your DC dosage on amoxicillin

My ds is 5 and has an ear infection. Normally he's given amoxicillin 5ml 3x a day

Last night he was prescribed amoxicillin by a nurse at a walk in centre 10ml 3x for 5 days.

She says cause he's 5 he's ready for 10ml but he was on antibiotics last month and was only given 5ml.
I'm confused as to weather or not this is normal and it's making me a little nervous

Because his gp is closed over the weekends I couldn't leave him with ear pain for 2 days however i will ring his gp on Monday to ask her opinion, but I would still love to hear from other mums!

What is the strength of the antibiotic? Have they doubled the dose rather than increase the strength?

My dd never had more than 5ml at a time.

My 3 year old was prescribed 10 ml 3 x a day for Scarlet Fever
We questioned the length of course with another GP & she said it was almost IV dosage and dropped it down to 5 ml 3 x daily for a longer period.

It won’t harm him though but might be worth querying it.

It's 250 like he usually gets prescribed.

Call 111 or approach a pharmacy if you are worried

My DS has been prescribed the 10ml dose of Amoxicillin since he was 5. I did question that with his GP, and was told that they now prescribe the adult dose for children once they are over the age of 5. I think that this is a fairly recent change though to the guidelines for antibiotics.

Ds (5.5) was given 6ml for tonsillitis. Prescribed by a paediatrician rather thank go and based on his weight (21kg).

elizabeth27 · 15/05/2018 11:46

My dd is 16 months - 24lb and on 10ml 3 x a day - 250g - this seems like an awful lot compared to above????

CafeAuLait7 · 15/05/2018 13:12

I suppose it depends on her weight and what type of infection she has, you could always ask the chemist about the dosage or ring the dr back

When my son was 1-4 years his dosage was 250g 5ml 3X a day. That was usually for ear infection.

elizabeth27 · 15/05/2018 13:17

I’m waiting for the doctors to call me back - the receptionist seemed to think it was a lot not that I’d obviously take her word for it!!

elizabeth27 · 15/05/2018 13:27

She’s 24lb and it’s for tonsillitis

elizabeth27 · 15/05/2018 14:14

They got it wrong! They apologise (!) and have spoken to the poison line and thank god she will be ok.... should have been 5ml. 3x a day.....

CafeAuLait7 · 15/05/2018 14:18

Thank goodness!!! I knew they changed the dosage for children 5 years and over but it didn't seem right to give that much to a 16 month old.

BoobleMcB · 16/05/2018 17:01

The standard dose from 5-17 is 500mg three times per day. The MAX dose across all age ranges is upto 30mg/kg :-)
