What could this be?

DD age 4 woke up this morning with a very bad headache and a temp of over 39. I gave her some calpol and it went down to 38.6, it's creeping up again to over 39.

She doesn't appear to feel too bad, eating and drinking but she has got a very snotty nose and sneezing and seems to be a little light adverse (could be the temp)

Colds don't usually come with temperatures do they?

I will keep an eye out but don't know if I should be too worried about the temperature?

A temp usually means an infection or viral infection
Keep an eye on temp any rashes etc
If your really worried ring 111

Kids do get these a lot the headache usually is dehydration as the body is using water stores to cook itself down so make sure clear fluids are sipped regularly - I’ve lolloes and I’ve pops are good too as they enjoy them and I’ve in drinks
Wet flannel to head

But always get a medical opinion if your worried 111 are great

Hope they get well soon

Thanks. Her temperature was just at 39.6 so I'm taking her to to see the doctor later. She's not herself, for one thing she's not moved from the sofa and this has never been heard of! She's normally 100% maximum! Just need to check there's no underlying infection before the weekend.

Are chicken pox doing the rounds in your area? My wee girl had two days of high temp, head ache and light aversion then the spots appeared. Don't give Ibuprofen just incase

Lovelise · 16/03/2018 13:59

Oops, yes I thought about chicken pox. She hasn't had it yet. No rash or spots yet though.

Everything seems to be going round at the moment! 9 month DS has just recovered from HFM and tonsillitis poor little thing!

She's sleeping now which is also very unusual, I hope it makes her feel a bit better.

Kids get temperatures it normally passes within a day or two , if she is drinking and weeing and is rousable I wouldn't take her to GP yet

meme70 · 16/03/2018 14:20

My kids x 4 have all had higher temps than that I think you should do what you feels best though
Tbh a nurse practitioner is better as they can do nearly as much as a doctor

I’d ring 111 first :)

OP go with your gut instinct, if you feel GP is needed then do it. If it was my ds I would be seeing the GP.

pimlicolife · 16/03/2018 14:40

Hard to say, but could be any kind of infection.

Chicken pox is doing the rounds. High temperature and a snotty nose then spots a couple of days later.

Poor little thing is really poorly, early night and lots of fluid.

And yes, we did see the GP and I'm glad I got her checked out.

Anything over 39 I would go, she's only 3.
