Un-coordinated pooing!

First time mum with a 7 week old. For the last month or so he's been really struggling with his bowel movements. Health visitor say he needs to learn how to coordinate his pooing ie. push while relaxing his bum. Sometimes we go 7 days between stools and in the meantime there is lots of red faced straining (including at night) and then it descends into a complete melt down and still no poo Sad. Now been 4 days and it feels like he's never going to get the hang of this! Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and it's sorted itself out - so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.Smile

A newborn doesn't need to learn how to poo, it comes naturally as a bodily function like peeing, breathing, blinking. I'm sorry but I've never heard of anything so stupid. 7 days between poops isn't normal especially as you can see you lo struggling to pass the movement's, take him to a gp and get some age appropriate medication or try some cranberry juice watered down in boiled/cooled water, that worked for my lb at that age.

Is he breastfed? If he is then a long time between bowel movements is perfectly normal. I think the longest we had was 10 days. If bottlefed then it is more of a concern but not really a big deal.

HV sounds completely nuts.

Go and see your GP. He's obviously struggling and your HV has given you horrible advice. Don't listen to her on anything going forward.
