An an ear infection last this long?

About 5 weeks ago ds(2yrs) got diagnosed with an ear infection. Symptoms were off food/high temp/screaming in pain/ red ear etc. Given antibiotics and cleared up so we thought.

He had a cough/cold for 2 and a half weeks at the same time and the cough was waking him frequently at night. He had always slept through since he was a baby but since the cough has gone he wakes once or twice every night and demands to get in our bed, sometimes still distressed even when I let him in with us. I assumed he got into the habit when he had the cough and that was why he was waking but the past few days I’ve noticed his ear is red and hot again. Can an ear infection grumble along like this mildly for a long period of time without fever etc? His ear was also red and hot when he had a virus type thing with fever a few days before Xmas and I didn’t take him to gp as it cleared up on its own.

He’s been complaining he’s tired frequently throughout the day for the past two weeks so I’m wondering if it’s him feeling run down or the ear disrupting his sleep that’s causing it. I’ve given ibuprofen tonight and he’s dropped straight off, first time in ages he’s gone straight to sleep at bedtime.

Sorry that’s long! Will be taking him to gp in the morning but just wondering if anyone has experience of the low level ear problem over a longer period of time? Thanks

A couple of years ago my son got antibiotics for a chest infection but they commented that his ear was a bit pink. A couple of days after ab’s we’re finished he was screaming in pain I think when he was weeing. He did have signs of infection but not definitely urine one. Commented that his ear was a bit pink. Antibiotics prescribed for Urine infection. Less than a week later back at ooh’s as he was screaming in pain and really really upset. His ear was very very red. I do now wonder if he had an ear infection the whole time.

Also my DD’s ears have been known to perforate twice in a few weeks.

So yes I think it could still be that. Definitely a trip to gPs tomorrow

Thanks Luckymummy, what a stressful time that must of been!

He just seems ‘not right’ so hoping for an answer tomorrow. I did ask if his ear hurt but he was non commital. He wouldn’t tell me if he was in pain generally, just as he doesn’t tell me if he’s hungry or thirsty despite good speech/vocab so it’s hard to tell.
