Amoxicillin allergy

My LO was prescribed amoxicillin as she was taking a while to get over a bad cold - the doctor didnt actually say she had an infection, just that this antibiotic would get rid of the remainder of what she had.

I started her on it yesterday afternoon - she had 3 doses of 5ml between 3pm-11pm so in 8 hours.

After the first dose I noticed a few small spots on her chest and then by the end of the night it was on her face, back, more on her chest and arms.

I rang 111 they said i may have given her too much. She was crying a lot last night and seems annoyed.
Took her to a different doctor today who has ruled out chicken pox and said it must be an allergy to the Amoxicillin and gave me Erythromycin instead.

I've now tried this today - bit concerned I'm just plying her with different meds and I'm not even sure what its for now. Im more concerned about the rash.

Please help if youve had a similar problem. She seems fine generally but is crying more than usual and scratching behind her ears.

(she has also been teething so may be linked..)

its just awful and I'm not even sure what the main problem is..

We can't know what the problem is.

You'll need to ask your GP.

The rash might have been a post-viral rash. Mine got that a few times. It looked like little pin-pricks, mostly on the torso.

Neither of my ds's can take any penicillin based antibiotics, but the effect is nausea & diarrhea.

Your GP sounds very vague. It's unusual to be prescribed an antibiotic without knowing exactly what is the issue- chest infection, ear etc. my GP would never give them for a viral illness

Dd is allergic to amoxicillin. She also came out in a dreadful rash, swollen tongue and had a really bad tummy for days after just one dose. I really don't understand why a gp would prescribe antibiotics for a cold though.

I am allergic to most penicillins. I get hives which look like nettle rash and are itchy. But, you can also get hives from a virus. The pin prick rash ypu have described sounds like a normal viral rash to me.

thanks all - yes the rash is quite patchy - yes i agree the doc should have said what the infection was but she just said it was to get rid of any remnants- she did check her chest so she must have seen something but didnt.

she still has a sort of raspy voice when she babbles and also a cough - so something is still bothering her.

the rash just scared me - the doc today seemed to think it was just allergy but did rule out her going to nursery or near anyone pregnant

Post viral rashes are very common. Giving antibiotics for a virus is nuts. Would change doc!
