Scarlet Fever

Can you have it without being particularly poorly?
And does the rash always feel like sandpaper.
My DS is being treated for it but apart from high temp and a rash there are no other signs he has it.
His rash is raised and reasonably red but not necessarily Scarlet.
Tongue normal and throat looks ok.
Rash did start around the neck which I think can be a sign?
His cheeks are flushed but then they can be anyway when he’s hot.
I will of course trust GPS judgement and give him ab’s but not 100% convinced it is that

Could it be slapped cheek?

When dd has SF she was most ill ive ever seen her

When my son had it he was extremely poorly it was horrible to see him go through it , and he looked like a tomato had the bad throat and basically slept for 48 hours !

Yes It made my DD very ill (we took her to out of hours) and because it’s so rare now they asked if the other staff could look at her, because some of them had only seen it in textbooks

My son's never been as poorly as he was with scarlet fever, but it was the fever that did it- close to 40. Once the fever came down he perked right up, and was basically fine 24 hours after starting AB's. He also looked like a tomato- well beyond pink cheeks, he was red top to toe. The rash was in addition to the general redness and started about a day in, primarily on his thighs and back, but I didn't think it was particularly raised or sandpaper-like.

Both are going round the nursery.
The child in Drs before him had slapped cheek (from the same nursery)
The rash came before the red cheeks though.
He may have had slapped cheek before but I don’t think Dr 100% confirmed it at that time

His throat was also very gunky- he was treated for tonsillitis before they realised it was SF.

It was the most unwell he has ever been, they wanted him to go straight to A&E by ambulance he was that ill. I drove him as I told them I'd be quicker than the ambulance, I think they thought he had meningitis but it turned out to be scarlet fever.

That looks like the rash DD had. But she was very poorly. Temp of 40

Sorry posted too soon. She only had the rash and temp. Wasn't particularly scarlet either

My son wasn't especially I'll when he had scarlet fever. The thing is...you can't take the chance. If the dr thinks it might be the they have to treat it because untreated it can be horrendously dangerous. It can kill you or cause lifelong heart problems.

Dd wasn't particularly ill. She had huge gunky tonsils, temp and sand paper rash but she was still running wild which was unexpected

My DF had it as a child and nearly died.

Maybe check with the Dr if you are concerned.

Another one her who wasn't particularly ill with it. Rash and a high temperature and tired/grumpy but not unwell as I'd think someone with scarlet fever would be, iyswim.

We also had quite a lot of doctors take a look as most hadn't seen it before. (Took him to A&E due to the rash in advice of 111 to rule out meningitis.)

DS was really ill (non responsive/non blanching rash) and only very briefly had the rash (literally less than 12 hours) but the head paediatrician diagnosed him and it could be the iv antibiotics made the rash disappear. he did have a v v high temp as well (40)

Eldest also has a rash. Now to start her on ab’s. Spoke to Dr on phone but she already had a prescription we hadn’t filled from a sore throat earlier in week (it’s a virus but here is penicillin if she gets worse). She’s not poorly anymore and rash not as bad but is there

The more I look at rash and the way it’s spreading down to top of the legs now - I think GP is right. And it’s like no viral rash he’s had. And rash on neck and behind ears too.
