Panicking

My son has had a very minor cold the last week, probably got over it friday. Saturday he woke up and seemed grumpy, runny nose. But a massive gland. I'd say the glad under his left ear was the size of a small bouncy ball (pic included). I took him to the dr Monday who said to basically bring him back if it didn't improve but it looked liked a reactive gland and he wasn't concerned 'at this point'. I'm just terrified. I made the stupid mistake of going on google and now I'm convinced it's lymphoma. Anyone seen a gland swell like this in their own children?

My ds had this as a toddler!! Went to gp and he told me to go to hospital ASAP. Even offered to phone an ambulance for us. It was a virus and needed meds immediately. Please phone 111.

Phone 111. Don't think you are wasting anyone's time or over reacting. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

I'm not by any means medically trained but if your concerned just take him to the dr tomorrow. He's already been checked over but get some peace of mind. If his other symptoms aren't getting any worse I'd wait it out until you see the gp. Otherwise just ring the nhs helpline if your concerned for him tonight.
I know it's easier said than done but don't google!!

I know we can fear being 'that' parent but you're terrified - get a second opinion, tonight if you can't wait til the morning. Better to feel foolish than regret doing something when your instincts are telling you it's not right. Good luck OP, hope he's ok x

Can't really tell over the internet, but high odds that he needs antibiotics. Bigger than the usual viral reactive stuff. Please don't go googling. We're seeing loads of secondary lymphadenitis this year (infection in the glands in the neck), and lymphoma presenting like that is incredibly rare.

My son had this a few years ago when he was about the same age.

It was an abscess on his tonsils. Needed IV antibiotics for a week.It was horrible but he recovered completely.

Thank you everyone. We have had to take him a&e during the night as his temperature sky rocketed and he struggled to breathe. They think it is mumps, even though he has has had all him immunisations, apparently they are only 95% effective.

Oh when I saw this I was going to say mumps.

My brother and I both had mumps as children despite being immunised. He looks like photos of me when I had them!

If this is any consolation, I have extremely fond memories of having mumps. I don’t recall and pain or irritation (like with chicken pox) but I do remember lots of tv, mashed potato and loads of mini milk ice lollies!

Hopefully once the temperature is under control the glands will slowly reduce in size and he will be more comfortable.
