Bleeding when teething, maybe teeth grinding?

A couple of times my DS (16mo) has had smears of blood on his sheet in the morning. He's had a lot of colds and a couple of minor nose bleeds so I figured it was most likely down to that.

Tonight I've given him some milk and put him down, I can hear him grinding his teeth. A few minutes later, he's crying - I pick him up and there's a fair bit blood on his sheets. I grab a wet wipe and I can tell it's coming from his mouth but I can't see where. One of the blood patches is pretty large, about the size of an orange and fairly concentrated. I know it will look worse than it is because it's mixed with saliva but it's still scary. There's also a slightly smaller patch from earlier in the evening and a few smears. No blood on him or his sleeping bag, but he sleeps on his front.

He has a lot more teeth on the top than the bottom (he's getting his second set of top molars through at the moment but he's being a trooper about it and rarely needs anything for it). So maybe he's cut his lower gum with his top teeth?

Obviously I need to get him seen - dentist first or doctor? Can I wait for a routine appointment or does he need seeing urgently? I don't know how common bleeding is when you're teething? Haven't heard of it happening to anyone else but that doesn't mean it's rare.

Anyone had anything like this?
