DS is 1 and has been prescribed amoxocyllin today to be taken three times a day. Is this every 8 hours or during waking hours. He’s up in the night so he could have it then.

Every 8 hours is best if you can

I gave them in the night but he seemed to struggle to get back to sleep after and a bit agitated- anyone seen this as a side affect??

I never give in the night. It says 3 times a day so I give 3 doses in day time hours. So 7am, 12.30pm, 7pm roughly.
I don’t even wake myself up for antibiotics. And surely if you give at 7am, 7pm, 7am then it will take longer to finish the course?

Rainbowsandflowers78 · 18/01/2018 08:23

I do what black does too

widgetbeana · 18/01/2018 10:39

Yeah we do 7, 12, 7 too.

Occasionally if hey woke early in the morning for whatever reason we would give them their morning dose at say 5 to get it closer to every 8 hours, but generally if they are sleeping normally we did 7, 12, 7

Never give in the night the doctor advises to take evenly throughout the day so morning afternoon and evening

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 23/01/2018 09:39

I worked in pharmacy for 20 years, wed tell parent for three doses, give one at breakfast, one at bedtime and the middle dose in about the middle of the day. Usually because mum would ask if she needed to go into school to administer the second dose.

MotherOfDragons22 · 23/01/2018 10:05

Why on earth would you only give it 8 hourly? 3 times a day so 8 12 4?

SandLand · 23/01/2018 10:21

Mother I'd instinctively try to spread them out as much as possible - not compress into one 8 hour block. So first thing, last thing, and somewhere in the middle. Why would you want to deprive yoyr body if somethingbthat is helping it from 4pm til 8am the next say - 16 hours?

MotherOfDragons22 · 23/01/2018 10:48

Sorry @sandland I disagree..

Seeline · 23/01/2018 10:52

GP advice was not to wake in the night, but spread evenly throughout waking hours.
Often ABs need to be taken with food otherwise they can cause stomach pain/nausea/vomiting so makes sense to time with meal times as much as possible, although I usually give the last dose at bedtime with a snack.
