Is my daughter 'very overweight?

Hello, I measured my 6 year old today. She is 120cm and 25kg. The nhs bmi calculator (children's) says she is very overweight! Im horrified! She was 9 and a half pounds at birth and has always kind of followed the 91st centile curve in the red book. Nobody has ever expressed any kind of concern about her weight at all and she is very active, eats well etc. I feel like a terrible parent allowing her to become overweight....she doesn't look it!

I came up with healthy BMI

www.nhs.uk/tools/documents/healthy_weight_v3/healthy_weight.html?variant=phone
I used this nhs tool and it said she was a healthy weight...

scaevola · 17/01/2018 19:37

Ditto - obviously in using the NHS tool we've had to guess dob, but my various guesses came in at 82-85 centile.

That is healthy range for a child

Dermymc · 17/01/2018 19:37

I just inputted the same figures and got healthy.

Are you sure you did it right?

yummycake123 · 17/01/2018 19:40

I also tried and I get a healthy weight, on the 85th percentile....

Pinkknickers · 17/01/2018 19:41

Oh my goodness well now I feel like a prize prat, thank you mum's...i must have put a wrong figure in somewhere! Thank you x

you dont need to post a picture, your child is still growing, i wouldnt worry too much at this age, just make sure she is eating a healthy mixed diet, cut down on any sugary snacks and drinks and get plenty of fun exercise / swimming in.

ijustwannadance · 17/01/2018 19:41

My 6yo is taller and heavier than yours and was also a big baby. Looks older. She isn't overweight at all.
If your child was overweight, surely you could see it just by looking at them?

Luckymummy22 · 18/01/2018 18:09

It is heavier than my 6 year old. Not sure what height she is, probably a bit above 120cm but who knows.
She’s skinny though! And I think in Reception weight check she was 19th percentile.

She was 9lbs 5 ozs born biti I think that was mostly made up of Pringles!!

nocoolnamesleft · 19/01/2018 02:02

So that's BMI 17.36

Looking at the BMI centile chart, depending on date of birth, she is somewhere between the 75th and 91st centile for BMI*. 91st is usually counted as overweight, so she is close to it. But not, I think, crossed it. Maybe make a few healthy swaps so that she gains weight slightly slower, and then she'll slim down a bit naturally when she grows vertically?

www.rcpch.ac.uk/system/files/protected/page/GIRLS%20and%20BOYS%20BMI%20CHART.pdf

*ie, if you lined up 100 girls born on her birthday, that are the same height as her, somewhere between 9 and 25 would be heavier than her, and somewhere between 75 and 91 would be lighter than her. Approx.
