Coughing

I’m looking some advice regarding my 5 year olds daytime only cough which started around two months ago.
As soon as he wakes up he has a mucus like cough which I was advised by the doctor that an antihistamine would help. This only helped for a few hours and personally I don’t want to give him a medication that makes him drowsy. The doctor then give him a blue inhaler which sometimes helps and other times makes him worse. He also does this thing were he keeps taking big deep breaths and then coughs sometimes for hours.
He does not cough at all at night and isn’t wheezing. Sometimes when he has been out in the cold and then comes indoors his cough can start.
I would love some advice as I’m at my wits end and feel I’m not getting anywhere 😩

Could it be an allergy to something in the house like dust mites? That might be why the antihistamine helps for a few hours? Which on did you give him? Maybe try giving him a long acting one (like cetirizine) every day for a week or so and see if that helps? That generally doesnt cause drowsyness. Allergy uk have slme good info on dealing with house dust mites in the house.
Other possibility is that he had pertussis (whooping cough) a few months ago and this os the leftover cough. Its sometimes called the hundred day cough because it lasts and lasts for so long but will eventually go away.

Thx for your reply.
He has just been tested for allergies and everything came back clear but I do have anti-allergy bedding and I clean the house twice a week to keep dust at bay in case it was because of dust.
The doctor prescribed cetirizine as they seem to think it’s post-natal drip and maybe I didn’t give it a chance.
I’m now looking into silent reflux.
He had a mild cough until he got his flu jab and when he got his flu jab last year he took croup two days later.
Feel like pulling my hair out as he must be exhausted coughing the way he does all day 😩
