Am I over reacting to go to A&E?

7yo has a temp of 38.5c, headache and now says the light is hurting his eyes.

I'm waiting on a call back from 111 (called them before the light started to be a problem) and am trying to get through to let them know about the light issue to see if it makes any difference.

I've been on the phone for 15 mins trying to get through. Google suggests these could be meningitis symptoms (but I guess they could also be flu/a virus).

I'm thinking about taking him to a&e anyway. Is this an overreaction?

Temp isn’t too bad but I would be worried about the light thing so YANBU

Freezingwinter · 24/12/2017 19:57

I'm a paeds nurse, 111 will say a and e anyway. Go right away with these symptoms x

LaughingLlama · 24/12/2017 19:59

If you suspect meningitis dont hang around for a call. Get to A & E now. Speed is essential with meningitis.

Needmorehands · 24/12/2017 20:10

Can he look down, chin to chest? 111 should ask you.
If you choose to head to A&E, go now before the drunks get too busy!
Hope he is OK

I’m a nurse and I would take my child to a+e with those symptoms. A rash is one of the last symptoms of meningitis to appear - the adverse reaction to light, headache and raised temp would be enough for me with a child of that age x

missyB1 · 24/12/2017 22:00

Just go don’t leave it to chance.

Turkeyneck · 24/12/2017 22:02

Yes A&E definitely, now. Good luck.

Makingahome · 24/12/2017 22:03

Go. Early treatment makes a huge difference if it is menigitis.

Haggisfish · 24/12/2017 22:07

Ds has these symptoms. Went to a and e-just a virus, but they said always wise to get it checked.

Twickerhun · 24/12/2017 22:09

Go in please. DS has the same symptoms, it was jennnjoyis which needs treating quickly

Twickerhun · 24/12/2017 22:09

Go to a and e. DS has these symptoms and it was meningitis which needs treating quickly.

Twickerhun · 24/12/2017 22:10

Sorry for two posts.

Haggisfish · 24/12/2017 22:11

Actually, I would just go to a and e. 111 will be inundated tonight. Hope ds is ok.

Itscurtainsforyou · 24/12/2017 22:14

Thanks all - 111 couldn't tell me when they'd be able to get someone to call back so I've brought him to a&e. He's been triaged and they've done the neck test so he's probably ok but we're waiting to see a dr just in case.

He's getting bored so that's probably a good sign!

Thanks for your input. It feels like such a fine line between overreacting and being blasé.

Don't wait for 111
They will say A n E.

Callamia · 24/12/2017 22:16

I don’t think any A&E staff would think you had over-reacted. I hope he’s better soon.

chickywoo · 24/12/2017 22:16

Sorry - your already there ! Blush

Angie169 · 24/12/2017 22:21

how is he now ?

ItsNachoCheese · 24/12/2017 22:23

Hope he feels better soon

Rachie1986 · 24/12/2017 22:31

Hope he's ok x

madeyemoodysmum · 24/12/2017 22:39

I'm going to get my kids jabbed next spring. My dad had meningitis and it's no laughing matter

I hope your son is ok. I'm sure he will be. It is pretty rare tho comes in very quick when it happens. Another sign is very cold hands and feet compared to the rest of him
Vomiting headache. Stiff neck.
Delirious. Very very ill child.

Please update and a merry Christmas I hope you will have. X

Twickerhun · 24/12/2017 22:39

Boredom is a great sign.
