7 year old keeps clearing throat

My daughter is 7 as is CONSTANTLY clearing her throat. It started about a year ago but over time she started doing it less and less and then it stopped completely. Within the past couple weeks though it's started again. She literally can't go 1 minute without clearing her throat at least once. What could this be? Is it worth taking a trip to the doctor or is this just a habit. Anyone have any similar experiences?

My son did this also and was diagnosed with a pet allergy.

I took my son to the docs at about 10 years old and they gave him a nasal spray whoch sorted it out. It was excess mucous dripping down from his nasal passages into his throat. I certainly think it had become a habit as well tho.

Could be a tic, but equally could be an allergy or nasal drip. I'd see gp

I had a friend who did this constantly and it was a nervous habit. She also bit her nails down to the skin...and had sweaty palms. Is he ok in other areas, does he suffer from anxiety at all?

My son is 7 and also does this. I took him to the GP about a year ago and was told it was a tic and he should grow out of it. He doesn't really do the throat clearing anymore, but now he clicks his fingers instead and has a habit of squeezing his eyes shut.

If you are concerned see the GP in case it is something else, just to be sure.

asthma?
has been quite cold the last couple of weeks.

It could be an allergy best to get it checked out may be a mild allergy, i have allergies and what you are describing feels like a tickley throat and it feels like you want to clear the throat. It may be a good idea to note if its after eating all the best.

Thanks for replies. I think I'll take her to the doctor. The past 2 days she's been doing it but not as much..but usually she does it several times in a row or 1-2 times every 30 seconds or so. When she did it last year i looked it up and put it down to being a tic and her growing out of it..so when it did eventually stop i thought that was the end of it but now its popped up again. I'm keeping an eye on it. When we ask her why she's doing it she says 'my throat is dry' (we give her water and never makes a difference) or 'I don't know'. Will see what gp says

Mine did this. It would come and go like that. Because it's Christmas I would say she is apprehensive about that. My advice is to ignore it and it will go away. Interfering in it or drawing her attention to it isn't going to help, it'll make it worse. She'll get the idea that it's 'bad' and then get worried about it and then that worry will make it happen more.
I suspect your daughter will stop doing this after Christmas. Mine used to do this at various times, she hasn't done it at all in the past 3 years, she's almost 13 now.
At the minute it's your problem not hers, so you need to increase your tolerance for throat clearing, sorry.
