Snotty/scabby sore nose

My 20 month old son has recently had hand, foot and mouth which has almost all cleared up but as he's had a cold at the same time he has crusty, cement like snot practically blocking his nostrils. His nose is red and sore with scabs from the HFM and so he will not let me wipe it, he screams and wails in hysterics. Anyone have any tips how I can get it off without hurting him? Thanks

Hot steamy bath to loosen it. Thenwipe when he's asleep.

I did try twice to give him a bath and both times he refused to sit down, I'm sure it was because he had sores on his legs and bum. I will keep trying though. Thank you
