Infected dc ear piercing Advice please *photo*

Hi everyone,

Looking for advice please. Dc ears appear infected. Got them pierced in July and they've often had clear or creamy coloured fluid coming out. I've been cleaning with the solution we got from Claire's and started putting savlon on them.

Looked today and they look like this (see attached photo).
Would u take them out? I've booked a doctors appointment.

Any advice from anyone would be appreciated. I don't understand why they keep weeping and crusting. She doesn't touch them. But has tape covering them for school and I am wondering if it is the tape which is causing the problem.

Why does she have them taped for school? after 6 weeks she can take the m out - a few hours a day would be fine (although if they are still weeping, they are more likely to close up I would think).

I would bathe with warm/hot salt water as frequently as possible rather than the cleaning fluid - that is also only meant few the first few days isn't it?

No photo sorry. Before the doctors get some TCP and apply liberally - squeeze it into the hole of you can. The stuff they give you is no good for an infection and I always feel like savlon type creams provide a nice environment for germs to grow.

My dd had the same at Claire’s, only in the one ear though, soon as I changed to 9ct gold earrings from a jewellers they were fine

What were they pierced with, what metal does she wear?

What did/do you clean with?

Also agree with the warm salt water for cleaning, the cleaning solution is rubbish

Have you already taken the earrings out? If the piercing is infected leave the earrings in, you need to let it drain.
Stop putting Savlon on them and do not even touch the Claire’s solution - it’s crap. Boil water and add a teaspoon of salt to a small cup, let it cool slightly and clean with cotton pads and salt water twice a day.
Does she have butterfly back earrings? Try and find a decent piercing studio near you (NOT Claire’s or a hairdressers) and ask if they can have a look and maybe change for titanium labret studs, they’re the least likely to cause a reaction and are flat on the back so don’t irritate the ear as much.
If it gets more red or angry see the GP.

Mine did that. I am allergic to metal. Earrings were not a good idea

Please don’t put TCP on or in the hole!! Salt water will be perfect and TCP will irritate it more.

Pharmacist told me TCP. But if saltwater does the job, great.

Warm saltwater to clean, is she wearing gold or silver earrings? When I got mine pierced at Claires, I picked out some 'fashion' earrings and I was allergic to nickel which could be what this is?

Looks like mine went. Turns out I was allergic to the metal in them and it was contact dermatitis. I took them out as so much hassle but have since had cartilage piercings with a non reactive metal and they have been fine since the day and hour they were done.

Thank you so much for all your replies. It's really appreciated. She has a doctors appointment this morning. She is worried they will close up but if it seems unlikely then I will take them out for school to let them calm down. Perhaps I will buy some better earrings from a jewellers. She's been wearing silver ones and then some from new look. Both made no difference. Perhaps I will buy some gold ones from h Samuels.

I will turf out the claires solution and try salt water.

If you’re getting new jewellery, don’t get precious metals like gold, please try and get surgical (not stainless) steel or titanium. If her skin is reacting to the metal then it should settle down with these, you can get them from decent piercing/Tattoo shops or order online.

Agree with Catbug. If it turns out an allergy go to a good piercing studio that sells jewellery, those guys know their stuff. Lots of metals set me off; titanium I've found for me is the best one.

One of mine is crusting at the moment and mine have been done 30+ years.

I get this occasionally and my skin reacts to a lot of things, I can't use plasters.

I put in studs I know I do not react to and then use salt water and a cotton bud to clean. The earing and back should not pinch the lobe at all, you might need to get some with a bit of space.

BTW how often do you/ her clean her earings?

Agree you need titanium. Cheap metal earrings have ruined my ears

DD had hers done at the same time I’ve still not let her wear non titanium ones
