One year old always ill- is this normal?

Hi all,

I already expect that this will be normal but just want some reassurance I guess as we are feeling a bit fed up, DD included.

DD is 14 months, started nursery at 10 months and we seem to be going through a phase of her constantly being ill.

One cold after another, awful 2 week long sickness bug, illness after 1 year vaccinations, hand foot and mouth disease, being sick in her sleep due to coughing... We are tired, our poor DD is fed up and we feel like it’s just one thing after another.

If DD is unwell we have her in a travel cot in our room or cosleep if really unwell. Feel like she’s rarely in her own room at the moment and we don’t have time to switch off at night. I work pt, DH is ft, we’re drained.

Please reassure me that this is a phase and it gets easier, feel so sorry for our DD.

It's a phase. My DD was sick for most of the first few weeks of nursery. However, since then, she hasn't been ill at all and she's 5 now. I do credit some of this to her not having any dairy products which as I understand create mucus, meaning that children get more coughs and colds.

Unfortunately it sounds normal, this year seems to be pretty bad with everything hitting one after the other, my youngest DD is 2 and at nursery since she was 6m, she always picks up the colds, coughs and other viral things, but we have been lucky espacing the sickness bugs that have been taking out the other children in the nursery.

It was the same with my oldest who is now 7 and migth have 1 or 2 days off school a year unwell, she will get the odd cold or cough but nothing that keeps her home, I'm hoping it was from building up a good immunity at nursery and that the little one will follow the same as she gets older.

Sounds really normal I’m afraid.
My 1st has quite a few things in 1st couple of years at Nursery including hfm twice and chickenpox. She’s 6 now and never ill.

My youngest was a lot worse and we had a really bad year. He’s 3 now and really improved when he turned 2. Still waiting for chickenpox though.

It’s hard but it does get better and is really building up their immune system

Starting nursery plus this time of year - it's a phase.

Buy in some booze, say no to all invitations, go to bed early for the foreseeable and it too will pass.

It's probably the nursery and the time of the year. It's a well known phenomenon.
