My five month old has a temperature and raspy cough. I'm I'm trying to get baby medication into him but he keeps spitting it out. Any tricks /tips to get him to take it? Thanks!!

Maybe try gently blowing at his face after you’ve given him the medicine; it should make him swallow as a reflex. Good luck 🙂.

If you can get the syringe wedged between the gums (so that the gums are clamped on it) and keep it there, that sometimes helps, as they struggle to spit it out then. Also position the syringe so that the meds go to the cheek towards the back, then tickle under the chin. Sometimes it makes them swallow involuntarily.

Will he take a bottle?

You can put the syringe into a bottle teat and see if he'll take it through that.

Was going to suggest mixing it with yoghurt but then read he's too small for solid food.

He'll be taking some medicine anyway, or put it in his mouth and then feed him to see what he swallows with milk.

Are you using a syringe? Make sure your squirting into the side of the mouth not down the back (like dh does Angry) just half at a time.
Some is better than non at all though so try not to worry and I hope your ds gets better soon

Do you use a syringe? Aim it at the back and to the left, then he shouldn't be able to spit it out.

If he keeps spitting you may want to get him paracetamol suppositories instead. Should be easier at that age.

revelsandrose · 22/11/2017 13:49

Same as pp have said aim for the back of the cheek, tiny bits at a time, takes ages but they swallow it all!

Wow thanks everyone! Some really great ideas there :) xx

Even by that age dd took medicine better if she felt in control a bit. So as upright as possible, let them hold the syringe with you, push out really little bits at a time that are easily managed.

Don't hold them down and force it, it becomes a battle.

Is it calpol? My dd doesn't like the sugarfree version or the supermarket own brands as much so if you can get the sweeter stuff that might help.
