Montelukast making asthma worse?

DS2 is 16 months and we are really struggling to get his asthma under control. He’s been on Clenil for several months and after we upped it to his current dose we had two lovely weeks where he was ok and it seemed under control. Then he caught a very mild cold a month ago and it’s all gone to pot. The GP added in montelukast 10 days ago and since then the coughing has been atrocious (and his sleep terrible in consequence). He isn’t otherwise ill at the moment. Does anyone have any experience of Montelukast exacerbating asthma symptoms? It is listed as a possible side effect which made me wonder whether it’s that. But equally it could just be coincidence I guess? Anyone have any experience?

I used to be on this but my GP stopped prescribing it, said they preferred not to, mentioned side effects, not sure what they were and whatever they were I wasn’t affected but I no longer have it.

My little one is on them including the inhaler and he's been fine with them he is 29 months old, he's had numerous infections since birth and has had adenoids removed and is under investigation with pediatrician as he's got IGG antibodies problem, pediatrician said he can't test or confirm asthma yet as he's too young but the inhaler etc is helping his lungs and airways and seems so much better

I was on mukelast (?) a years ago and it helped me when my asthma and peak flow were at their worst.

Hi OP, have a read of the NICE guidelines for
Bronchiolitis, montelukaust is not recommended at this stage for your ds.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Tobe. Thanks for the link. It’s not bronchiolitis though. He’s had many bouts of that, but they’re pretty clear at this point that he has asthma and montelukast is a standard treatment for that, even in under 2s!
