Flat head spots and mishapes

As a first time this worried me. My 9 week old started develop a flat spot on the right side back of head,as he has a preferences for looking right ( no matter what encouragement we give for looking left). When you look at his head from above his forehead on the right is slightly out. Is this because the flat spot has pushed the skull forward. We have tried moving his head, give him plenty of tummy time and keep him off his back when we can. I know the skulls are soft and prone to flattening, but was interested in advice and experience of others. My friend said all babies heads are different shapes until the skull forms, but how do you know it will sort itself out or if there is something wrong and if will causes any discomfort.
