Getting fat before a growth spurt...myth or fact?

DS is 11 and has alwaus been very lean and solid muscle. Noticed recently that he has developed fat around his torso - my DM who lives away so only sees him once a month noticed when we went round a couple of weeks ago so it is clearly noticeable.

Admittedly his diet isn't great - mainly due to a very limited food range that he will eat compounded by a new freedom to buy bacon butties at morning break at high school Wink

But he is very sporty with some form of training/match 4-5 times a week and walks to and from school every day (30 mins each way) he is easily getting enough activity and must easily be buring off any excess calories.

So I am a bit confused by the recent appearance of fat...I have read that boys in particular do get fat before a growth spurt. Is that actually true and if so, how long before the growth spurt?

Mine have done this, although admittedly my super skinny DS was just marginally less super skinny for a couple of months. Dd2 has just done this (mildly pudgy for about 3 months) and is shooting up now.

Ime it's true.
8x ds and all the older ones have had a bit of a podgy tummy before growing a fair few inches!! Ds 13 has been taller than me for a long time now!! And they are all gangly now!!

DD is the same age and is currently beanpole shaped, but she has always got a bit fatter before getting taller. But she's been like that pretty much all her life.

Anecdotally true here too if that's any help.

Thanks for the reassurance Smile not sure what else I could do as logic says tar he couldn't possibly be putting weight on considering how active he is.

How long does it last generally? Probably first noticed it on holiday about 6 weeks ago but I put that down to being in an all-inclusive hotel Wink
