My DD is only 2 weeks old and has awful acid reflux.

Been prescribed gaviscon infant today and she's had three doses so far and it has just made things seem worse.

I fed he'd at half 9 tonight, it's been over an hour and she's still writhing around in pain.

Question is- how long do I give Gaviscon infant to work before going back to GP? I'm really struggling with lack of sleep and worried about DD. Would it be ridiculous to go back to GP tomorrow? I thought Gaviscon is meant to work straight away.

Xxx

Go back to gp
May need something stronger than gaviscon

She may have non igi cows milk protein allergy. Ask about other formulas or if you are breast feeding you could cut out dairy for 6 weeks and see if that helps. don't use soya replacements though as that could cause issues.
Keep her upright as much as possible, tilt her bed if she ever uses it.
What is her skin and nappies like?
poor baby. poor mummy. Hope you can get to the bottom of it soon. x

Could be a allergy to the milk

I think gaviscon has a cumulative effect. Assuming she isn't presenting as increasingly worse on it I would give it a few days.

LapinR0se · 14/09/2017 16:27

Gaviscon is really not that effective. You might need something like Omeprazole. And yes consider CMPA

Thanks everyone! I have a poor 2 yo DD who has been so bored today because I've spent most of our time trying to soothe baby! Her poo is getting drier too so she's en route to constipation now...not a great day! Xxx

Wondering if anyone's had any success with Cow and Gate comfort milk?

comfort milk made my son worse. I've never seen so much sick.
If it is Reflux or CMPA then comfort milk won't help.
Maybe ask Dr for Ranitidine. It didn't work for us but did for others. We ended up with Omeperazole which did take away a lot of his pain.
You can get Anti Reflux milk but it was too thick for my boy and he was screaming in pain from constipation.
I think a trip back to Drs is needed. Good Luck!

Did they give lactulose with the Gaviscon? They should have (but often don't), because Gaviscon will always cause constipation which, if untreated, will lead to more pain.

If the Gaviscon doesn't work in a few days, go back again and they should give you a trial of Ranitidine. That works well for many, but if it doesn't, as Pps say, next step is a PPI like Lansoprazole or Omeprazole.

CMPI/A is a distinct possibility, so bear it mind that you may need to do a dairy-free trial.

Other things you can try are probiotics, like BioGaia or Biokult Infantis, or maybe Colief.

Hope she is better soon.

Great advice from shovingleopard and nothing to add to that other than sympathy. My middle ds had absolutely horrendous reflux and spent the first 6 months of his life doing nothing but puking. Much the same as you, I realised within days that Gaviscon wasn't working so I phoned the health visitor in tears as I was saturated in yet more sick and started him on ranitidine. I'm not convinced that worked for him either. It all completely stopped when I started weaning at 5/6 months. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Definitely go back to the gp. Good luck
