Impetigo

Dd picked up impetigo just before school finished. She had it for just over a week before I realised what it was and took her to the GP.

She was prescribed a 5 day course of antibiotics which almost got rid of it but within a couple of days of the antibiotics finishing the rash started getting worse again. I took her back to the GP as soon as I could get an appointment and she was given a further 7 days antibiotics and hydrocortisone ointment.

These antibiotics finished a couple of days ago but she still has some rash left but it seems to be getting worse again.

I can't get her to the GP till at least Monday. Does anyone know of any over the counter treatment that I can try till then to try and stop it getting worse?

How old is your DD and where is the rash on her body?

Were the second Antibiotics the same ones or different?

What is the reason you can't go back to GP before Monday? Has GP taken a swab?

Sorry for loads more questions Smile

I would say (Nurse) from your OP to go back to GP asap

It might not be Impetigo and even if it is needs the correct Antibiotics and Cream which you can only get on Prescription, over the counter stuff might make it worse, you could ask a Pharmacist to have a look though I would not recommend based on what you have described so far.

If it definitely is impetigo then there's no way she should have been given a hydrocortisone - it's a steroid and the worst thing to put on it

Fucidin cream will clear it up quickly (needs to be prescribed though)

If the impetigo is recurrent, then push for Naseptin. Often, the virus lies dormant in the nose and can flare up. The naseptin kills it off.

I had impetigo twice a year for 10 years (since primary school age). Was complete hell. For some reason doctors are reluctant to prescribe Naseptin. I bought it for £30 off an online pharmacy and it never came back. Best money I ever spent
