DS has broken his ankle - flight on Friday

DS had a small lump on his ankle last week. Took him to the Doctor who said to keep an eye on it and bring him back on the 16th August. The Doctor said he was fine to continue playing football etc. Yesterday he complained that it was hurting and because it looked really swollen we took him to A&E. It's broken. I'm such a bad mum.

It hasn't been put into a cast, he's got a boot.

I've rung the travel insurance company to inform them.

Is there anything else I need to do? Any advice as to what to expect over the next week or so? Will it swell on the flight?

He's played football, been roller skating and rock climbing all with a broken ankle. Will this affect his recovery?

Apparently the fracture clinic will be in touch with an appointment within 7 days. We are away for two weeks. I rang the fracture clinic but it is an answering machine service and they will be in touch within 24 hours. Any advice appreciated.

You may not be travelling..... I would have thought he will need a fit to fly certificate from a Doctor, but what if he's not fit to fly?

The hospital said that he would be fine to fly but didn't give me a certificate. He's got an appointment tomorrow with his GP (the one made last week). I'll ask for a fit to fly certificate.

You need to check when the next scheduled X-ray is due. If it is when you are due to be on holiday and cannot be rescheduled for immediately when you return you may need to cancel or be willing to find a hospital and pay for what is essentially a planned medical procedure

I don't know all the ins and outs of the flight stuff but I can tell you you're not a bad mum. If he's been so active how would you have known anything was broken?

I broke my ankle when I was 11, fractured the ankle part and the side of my foot on the way down my friends steps outside her house. I was worried about being home late so unbelievably I ran all the way home! I wasn't even in pain really, I think I had so much adrenaline rushing about.

It wasn't until about a week later when the bruising came out that mum took me for an xray and they realised that it was broken. I had been walking about on it all that time- yes I had a bit of pain but I thought I'd just twisted it so carried on! I must have a high pain threshold.

I had it in plaster for 6 weeks and then had physio and it healed fine. I am 37 now and has no problems since. Please don't panic. I'm sure it will be okay.
