My six year old boy has had a series of tonic clinic and focal seizures and has been prescribed Keppra to control and prevent the seizures. We are one week in and he his dose has now doubled to 5 ml per day. We have noticed (and so have school) that he is suddenly very hyper (he was already quite hyper but there is a noticeable increase). Has anyone had similar and does the hyper behaviour, shouting etc die down?? If so when?

Hi - just to say that my downstairs neighbor reported exactly the same thing happened to her 5yo DD when she started Keppra for atonic seizures. Her hyper behaviour actually used to trigger more seizures. After 3 weeks the doctors decided to start a new medication and phase out keppra. That's only just been done so no further update yet. (I only know this because I'm on keppra too - but clearly an adult and no hyper activity to report).

Most meds have a time that they need to settle and sometimes our bodies just neEd time to adjust to them, you could keep a diary of his behaviour patterns and try to see the doctor regularly? FYI I am on keppra as an adult and it has stopped my seizures completely, the only side effect that never went was the tiredness.

This happened to my ds when he was 3 or4 (I can't remember, he's 6 now!) and he became a different child, it was a nightmare, the epilepsy nurse noticed it straight away, he was a completely different child. Later I heard about 'keppra rage' and it summed it up completely.
There's lots of different meds they can try.
