Anyone know about antibios?

Are the antibios given for a child with tonsillitis the same as for scarlet fever?
My son (18m) has been prescribed some for tonsillitis but I wonder if it's actually scarlet fever. He had a red rash that looked like online pics of scarlet fever this morning, but it had faded by the time we saw a doc, and the observation was that his tonsils were too swollen to see the spots that suggest bacterial tonsillitis, but has been given antibios nonetheless on the basis of the symptoms having gone on for a few days. So it doesn't feel like a completely clearcut diagnosis , and I forgot to ask about scarlet fever til afterwards. But then if the antiobios are the same for both it doesn't matter anyway.
Anyone know the difference in medications for the two conditions? Thanks

You have a 10 day course for scarlet fever, how many days has your son been prescribed?

Yogafire · 02/07/2017 12:12

Twice a day for 7 days

I would get him looked at again if you suspect SF as it needs to be a longer course, in rare cases SF can cause heart valve damage if untreated.

Is allergic to penicillin? He should be on Penicillin 4 times a day for 10 days. If its twice a day i'm assuming it must be a different antibiotic?

Scarlet fever is caused by the same bacteria that cause tonsilitis so can be treated with the same antibiotic. But the scarlet fever rash doesnt tend to fade and come back. Did it feel rough to touch?

Did the rash feel like sandpaper? Scarlet fever classically does,

Most tonsillitis is viral, but if giving antibiotics it's to cover strep A. Scarlet fever is caused by strep A. The difference is how long you give them for.

And if you actually want anyone to help, surely you need to say which antibiotic he's on?!?

Hi thanks all. Sorry I should have added which antibio but I keep forgetting the name (including now). He got better very quickly once the meds started and the rash didn't return so it wasn't SF. And I forgot I'd started this post and have only just come back. Thanks for all the input.
