Constipated 8-month old?

Hello all, I think my little girl is constipated and I was wondering if anyone had any advice before I took a trip to the pharmacy tomorrow. She really strains and her body goes rigid and either nothing comes out or there is a small firm ball of poo which rolls off the nappy. She either does several of these a day or none of these a day. She has been on solids (well, purees) since she was approx 6 and a half months and she's still breastfeeding. She drinks water with meals (3 meals a day) and has a few drinks of water between meals and her snacks are breastmilk. Can anyone please advise me as to how much water she should be drinking a day for her age and also any advice on how to get things moving would be greatly appreciated as I hate see her struggling. She's clearly in pain when she does manage a small poo. Thank you. x

At her age a pharmacist probably wont be able to give you anything so would be worth making an appointment with the gp. If her poos are just hard then lactulose should help which acts as a softener. In terms of how much water, really as much as you can get in. Fruit juice might help too and if she would take them maybe prunes? Hope you get her sorted soon.

Thanks Iwillrun. Will have a go with prunes and fruit juice and make an appointment with the GP on Tuesday if she's still struggling. Good to know that I can't over water her so to speak! 😊

Hope your daughter is feeling better today. My daughter (21 months) has suffered from constipation for a while now but has been getting better.

I'm not sure if the pharmacist could give you anything? My Gp prescribed my daughter Movicol which helps a lot.

In the mean time, plenty of water, fruit juice, prunes, plenty of fibre and maybe even a bath? If my daughter was constipated I'd often let her have a long soak in a warm bath. It helped a lot! She would often go in the bath but it was worth it so she'd be in less pain!

Good luck!

Thanks shootingstar. She was still straining last night with not much luck. We gave her a whole 70g pouch of pureed prunes so I'll see how she goes today. She's still breastfeeding so if there's still no movement today then I'll have a glass of orange juice and if there's still nothing then I'll make an appointment with my GP on Tuesday. Hadn't realised that warms baths were helpful. She loves a bath so I'll definitely give that a try. I hate seeing her in pain and don't want her to start holding it in. x
