Blood in baby's ear

A few days ago I noticed my 9 month old son pulling at his ear then yesterday I spotted dry blood in his left ear and again today.

GP said it is an ear infection but did not prescribe anti biotics despite him having had a temperature and being in pain.

On NHS Choices it said antibiotics is given to treat it so annoyed I wasn't given this and instead told to just monitor it and give him calpol if temp rises or he's in pain. Does this sound right? Should I get a second opinion?

It doesn't sound right no. Go back and ask to see another GP!

How much blood? Fresh or old? I'd wonder if he's pulling at the ear whether he'd scratched it rather than anything worrying.

They don't generally give antibiotics for ear infections unless it has gone on some time or the drum has burst (and there's even debate over that)

If the blood's come since the GP appointment then you probably need to go back to check that the drum hasn't burst.

Thanks for your responses. I took him to A&E as his temp got worse overnight and more dry blood appeared. The doctors examined him properly (temperature taken, checked both ears) and they saw he has a burst drum hence the dry blood. I've been given anti biotics for him to take for the next 5 days.

Really disappointed with my GP and also annoyed with myself that I wasn't more persistent about getting him examined correctly. I should have gone with my instinct! Oh well, clearly a first time parent here! Thanks again for your responses.
