What does all this mean?

My 6 year old DS went to an appointment at the hospital today that he was referred to from CAMHS after an appointment with them and an assessment in school. He has physical tics which don't seem to have any trigger answer they have progressed to the point he is harming himself from doing them such as bald patches from hair pulling and bleeding toes from toe stubbing. I only have my husbands version of this appointment as I couldn't go but he says he is being referred to an occupational therapist and CYPS and the person he say today says he has an exceptionally high pain threshold. Husband has now gone to work after a very brief handover of children so I'm left here thinking what does all this mean and worrying DS has mental health problems!

Hi. I'm sorry I can't help you decipher the message from the doctor. I just wanted to say I have a 5 year old with physical tics that at worst can result in him falling off chairs and falling over he twists his body so much, and at best is constant sniffing,

We are waiting to see a paed for 2nd assessment. He did put a lot of emphasis on stress inducing tics the first time we saw him, but we can't pin point anything and it's not always the cause (ds's dad has minor, hidden tics).

Anyway, just wanted to say it's scary but whatever the cause I'm glad your son is on the road to help.

Thank you Cheery I'm going to go to the next appointment come what may because I just don't understand how they can insist it's not stress related but still want him to see Psychologists. Hope your DS gets some answers soon.

How long has these tics been going on for?
Hopefully you should get a letter outlining what happened in the appointment and what will be happening next, hopefully that will help you understand what went on there better.
We norm get a letter a few weeks after any appointment with them or any professional.
Always good as even if you are there it can be quite overwhelming and things can be overlooked or forgotten.

I think there can be scope for children to do CBT to overcome tics, do you think this might be why he could see a therapist? To discuss behavioural therapies?

Thanks for the replies they have been going on in a way that causes him to harm himself for about 3 years. Prior to that they were there but more minor jd didn't affect him the way they do now. Perhaps the therapy is things like cbt I suppose he did say something about coping strategies.
