Is colourless urine ok?

My ds is having to pee/wee a lot more than normal so I took him to see our GP yesterday. I have handed in a urine sample today and will get the results on Tuesday.

The urine is clear like water. Is that ok or something to worry about?

It just means it's very dilute. The more you drink the clearer urine gets.

Sounds like it should be ok then. I was really surprised to see the sample looking like water. But I dont drink very much which will be why mine is not so clear. Thank you for your reply onelump

I think it's a good sign. Too much colour means not enough fluids.

Obviously there may be something going on in terms of frequency but the colour alone isn't an indication of anything worrying.

Actually urine should be relatively clear (very light in colour). Yellow urine strong in colour and smell is a sign you're not drinking enough water.

Does he drink/complain of being thirsty a lot? You mentioned him needing to pee more often, but not that he's increased the amount that he drinks.

I must admit, even if I've made an effort to drink lots of water, I've never noticed my urine being completely colourless. But maybe I've just never drank LOADS of water at once

Is he drinking an excessive amount? The colour of the urine is not really the issue, it would be if he has extreme thirst as well as too frequent urination. Does he seem well in himself? Is it just water he drinks or is it juice? I ask because children may drink more than they need of juice as it tastes nice, whereas plain water won't hold the same appeal. If my child was drinking an awful lot of water I would be concerned about diabetes if it was alongside frequent urination and other signs.

Sounds like healthy output. If he drinks a lot he'll also, obviously pee a lot too.

Thank you for all your replies. I am the same as you HeyRoly I have never noticed mine being completely colourless. But I am guilty of only drinking green tea and coffee. Keep planning to drink more water.

He had a chest infection a couple of weeks ago and needed an inhaler, anti biotics and he had steroids for three days. I said to the gp I assumed it was some kind of side affect of the medication but the gp said no he didnt think so.

He has been drinking what he normally drinks. He has a glass (quite large) of half apple juice and half water in the morning. He has a bottle of water at school and small carton of apple juice for lunch. Small glass of water when he is home from school. Then another glass of half apple juice and water with his evening meal. And small glass of water an hour before bed. I am supposed to give him undiluted juice with meals (dietician told me) but he drinks a lot with meals so I dilute it.

I am sure that everything is ok because he has not been complaining of any pain and is not waking up during the night or wetting the bed (this is something that can happen). I was just very surprised that the sample had no colour. I think I will start drinking more water myself. Ds is obviously a lot more hydrated than I am.

Just a thought...you haven't mentioned your child's age, so I must ask....is there a possibility that he forgot to fill up the sample pot so he then got all worried and filled it with water because he thought he was going to get in trouble?! X

That would be funny! He is 8 and I was with him when he was producing the sample so is definitely his urine in the jar. He says it often looks like water so maybe it is normal for him.

Thank you CalineF. I had read some things saying it could mean there is something wrong which was why I posted on here. I was relieved and surprised to have replies saying that clear urine is a good thing. I am still a little worried because my DS always seems to have something for me to worry about. I get the results on Tuesday afternoon.

I drink over 2l of water a day (only liquid) and my urine is colourless. For me it's a sign of being properly hydrated.

Thank you MoonDuke I think that is the case for my ds. I only manage to achieve a straw (pale yellow) colour. But I know I sometimes need to drink more.
