Hives on 4yr old dd. What can she wear that will not irritate her skin?! Photo included.

Dd comes up in these hives every few days. Maybe law for a day ir two but sometimes disappears by the evening. Been to gp, long term antihistamines but she has had to stop now. She complains that all clothes, especially tights (worn all day at school as she refuses to wear trousers like a boy) make her itchy. Anyone have any magic remedies or recommendations for clothes that may help? Thank you.

Poor little girl. You need to sort this out. Pay for her to have some serious allergy testing to determine what she is allergic to. Then avoid it like the plague. Its not fair to her to let this continue,

What materials are you trying? So have you tried natural materials instead of man made?

I assume you've changed your washing power?

I have atopic children. Why does your daughter have to stop taking the anti-histamines? This sounds like bad advice. You should ask for a referral to the hospital.
In terms of clothing, are you using a good quality non-biological washing powder? You will need to buy a high-end product like Persil or Fairy. Use power or liquid on the lowest dosage you can - try half what is recommended on the packet, on the hottest wash you can manage without ruining the clothes. Absolutely no fabric softeners. Keep the bedding clean and rooms well dusted.

We use bio d laundry liquid, it doesn't seem to be that as the hives are periodic. She wore organic clothing until she was two, but now we just buy what she likes, normally awful pink dresses with rabbits on but I have some organic cotton vests for under these things. Gp said 6 weeks was the limit with the antihistamines but they worked very well so obviously she is allergic to SOMETHING or she wouldn't be producing histamine in the first place. She's a sensitive soul, emotionally as well as physically.

Could she wear her pyjamas at least inside out so the seams are on the outside ?

DD gets hives and one of the triggers for her is cold weather. Even a short time outside will cause an outbreak. Rain also causes hives and so does being ill. It took a long time to work out all the triggers.

I worked out that viscose and acrylic give me hives, but also reactions to other things related to what is often described as histamine intolerance (symptoms flare up when histamine load is high, so its not just one trigger, but lots). I remember my GP told me it can be heat/cold that triggers it to. Taking Zantac and Zyrtec sorts it for me (putting that there for information for other adults to look into if they suffer, but obviously you will need to follow medical advice for your dd). I would try to keep a detailed allergy diary to see if you can spot a link to fabrics/temperature/foods/any other triggers you can think of.

Dd had periodic rash due to the washing powder we were using - sometimes there were more clothes and powder in the machine so it didn't rinse as thoroughly. It cleared when we did her clothes on a seperate wash and ran the washer first time with a small amount of powder and the second with none at all.
We have also found cheaper less perfumed non bio powders (not liquids) are easier on her skiin - it is not related to the softness of the fabric but the residues on it. With tights the residues are in close contact so the rash was worse than for cotton dresses - nothing to do with fabric type, just proximity.

Yes yes yes to cold weather! Thought I was being over precious but it is definitely that which gives her the extreme bumps and redness!

I think sugar may be a trigger too. But it's so hard to tell when everything seems to have sugar, dairy, wheat and gluten in!

There is such a thing as cold urticaria, I have cholinergic urticaria which is almost the opposite
Ask for a dermatology referral and preferably an urticaria specialist
Antihistamine advice seems strange, I've been on 4 X 10mg cetirizine for 20 plus years

If cold is a factor then it's often change of temperature that affects it
So for me winter is crap because the change from cold - hot makes me flare
For cold urticaria I believe it's things like going from central heating to outside or out of a shop with heating etc

jacks my son used to bring the same. He has just about grown out of it now, but the cold weather used to bring him out in them. We had him tested for everything and had him on exclusion diets, the lot!

Worked out in the end it was temperature related and now just give medicine if they come up.

Would cotton leggings under a school skirt be an option? DD doesn't wear tights but is fine with leggings.

I was thinking that last night actually, giggling. Have ordered some tights from the poster's recommendation up thread so will see how they are first but leggings may have to be the answer of so else fails. She's okay today, hives are almost non existent. Give it 30 mins and she'll be covered as we are off to beach

Agree with PP, please get some proper allergy testing. The more you subject her to the allergens, the worse she will get.

I am allergic to latex, the allergy started after wearing gloves for years as part of my job. I now cannot even do anything remotely related to that job, or have balloons in the house, as the allergy is that bad.

This will only worsen if you don't find out what it is!
