Cleft palate repair

Dd2 has her soft palate repair coming up in a few weeks her nurse is coming over four days before the operation to talk us through some things but I still have loads of questions and feel this may be too late, if any of you or your children have had the operation could you clear a few things up for me?

Dd2 also has a bad tounge tie woukd they sort this at the same time?

Will she need to drink out of a cup after the op?

How long until she can have her bottle back?

If she had surgery first thing in the morning will she be kept in overnight assuming that all goes well and she eating/drinking

She likes to chew on her Sofie giraffe for comfort will this still be allowed even though it won't reach her stitches?

Iv heard about Nono's apparently they go on the babies elbow to stop them being able to bend and reach their mouths is this just an America. Thing or are they used in ge U.K. As well?

Yes she can have her bottle back straight away. Encourage her to drink as much as you can. Little and often is fine. Most babies stay 1-2 nights. She'll be given regular pain relief, don't be surprised if she's a bit miserable as it can be sore. You'll be allowed to go home when the nurses and cleft doctors are happy she's feeding well enough. I don't about Nonos, I've not seen them used.

My little boy only had a cleft lip repair, but others on the ward were having palates repaired. We were advised to use scratch sleeves to stop them being able to pull or scratch at their stitches, whilst not restricting their arms. Good luck with the surgery

Iv not herd of scratch mits before I'll have to get some in or is this something the hospital provides?

Dd2 still only take 2-3 ounces at a time so little and often is no problem she is also a grumpy child so miserable cant be that much different

We live 2 hours and a ferry ride away from the hospital so are staying with my gps for a few days after I'm hoping this won't cause any issues

Hi, it's a good few years since my DD's palate repairs but I just wanted to let you know that we asked for her tongue tie to be done at the same time as her 1st op. We discussed it with the cleft nurse initially and then on the day with the Drs during the form signing part. It had to be added to the form so we could give our consent. I'm glad we did. Saved need for another op at a later date and also avoided potential speech issues if we had left it.

The hospital that we went to didn't use arm restraints afterwards. There was apparently some research that it didn't help particularly and it can be distressing. I know other hospitals do different things though, and I don't have up to date info.

The hospital didn't provide the scratch sleeves so we did have to buy them, but it was much easier than trying to keep mits on. Plus the ends are made of silk, so less likely to catch on the stitches. Do you have contact details for a specialist cleft nurse you can speak to? Ours were so useful for asking questions before surgery.

We've managed to get an appointment with a dr tomorrow at our local hospital about dd2s tongue tie and have been told it may get snipped then

Ive looked into the scratch mits and sleeves but due to a death in the family we are now stretched to the limit finance wise and I will be adjusting some babygrows instead

We do have a nurse assigned to us, she's wonderful but we're not due to see her until the week before the op, due to distance it's very difficult to arrange a time to talk with her
