need help with getting over DD's pneumonia

Hello,
My daughter suffered from pneumonia last month. She was admitted to the hospital twice as the infection didnt clear the first time. She is fine now and doctors have given her all clear. Next review checkup is in march. However this morning she coughed just one or two small coughs. I have consulted the gp and she says her chest is perfectly clear. Has anyone else gone through this? And is it normal to ocassionally cough? I think I have become a little paranoid about her cough. Please let me know of your experiences. Regards

I've had a similar experience. Ds was admitted to hospital 2 years ago with breathing difficulties and since then I'm paranoid and obsessed with checking his breathing rate.

I've come to terms with it by getting practical knowledge and equipment.
We check his chest with a stethoscope and have a blood ox thing to put on his finger. I also count his breaths and check it against normal rates. I also look at his chest for signs of respiratory distress such as chest sucked under ribs.

I'm no medical expert but doing these checks helps me to feel better that he's ok. And if not, I can deal with accordingly.

Some people may find it's too much but it helps me sleep at night

I think it is perfectly normal for her to cough occasionally. I would have thought everyone does, dry throat, throat irritation, something like saliva down the wrong way, etc. Plus her airways will be more sensitive at the moment so something like different air temp might cause a cough when previously they didn't. Understandable you'd be nervous though but maybe just keep an eye and see gp if persists or she has other symptoms of not being right?

DottyGiraffe i know. Previously she used to get cough alongside every cold and flue. I think I am reading alot more into it now. Thankyou for your advice :)

It's understandable after what you've been through. It must have been quite a time for you.

Yes it was awful. She is 3 years old and couldnt understand what was going on. On top of that she was having breathing difficulties. It was heartbreaking to see her go through all that. I continuously hope and pray this problem doesnt appear again.. Thankyou so much for your kind words :)

I would try and support her immune system naturally. Read up or consult a western herbalist? Probiotics...good vitamin c...pay for vitamin d check (google birmingham vit d check). Learn some lymphatic massage points for immune and lung function...hope she continues well.

The cough is a normal, useful mechanism to protect the airway, deal with NORMAL airway mucus and maintain a healthy respiratory system. After an illness like pneumonia it's understandable you'd worry but a 3 year old is going to cough day to day . Just focus on general health- good diet, fresh air and exercise/play times. She will pick up other coughs and colds as all 3 year olds do so you're never going to avoid her coughing ever again!
