Sleep apnea

Has anyone had a two year old/ toddler diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea? My daughter had her tonsils out when she was 6 and now my 2 year old has been referred to ENT as he snores and holds his breath for up to 30 seconds!! Just interested how the NHS handles children this young. Thanks.

We have a little of OSA but our suspected cause is floppy larynx or subglottal stenosis (see the thread I've just started just below yours!) although it could be adneoids too. cWe've just had a sleep study done and are awaiting a camera down throat investigation soon.

I think they just take them out at 2 - my lo is 6 months and there were lots of babies/toddlers on the ent ward. I think they only take out if causing a major problem tho.

Thanks for your reply, that does sound scary! I've just googled it and the symptoms. I presume it's congenital? My son holds his breath when awake as well as when he's asleep (when he's asleep it's scary!) and he's small for his age so whatever he has might be effecting his growth too. Sleep study next, then diagnosis and a plan while I lose sleep worrying and dr googling everything

Yes my baby has come off her growth curve too - it can def affect weight and other stuff

Yes congential altho can be damage from intubation if baby is ventilated when young too (I think ours is congential).

The sleep study is fine - just a few monitors stuck on with pads - one for oxygen/breathing and heart rate and one to measure co2 although there may be different monitors depending on what they are looking for. We just did ours on a normal ward bed with nurse noting any gasping/noises/interventions such as saline drops.

I totally get you re lack of sleep - it's awful knowing you can fully relax at night. Do you have an apnea monitor?
30 seconds sounds like a long time and must be very frightening! Don't worry tho once you are having investigations they'll get sorted.
