DD with high temp-advice please

My DD 22 months woke up at half 4 this morning and vomited. She had a temp of 39 and was very upset and crying. She was asking for water so had some water and calpol/neurofen and about 40 mins later vomited the water up. The temp hasn't went down despite another dose of calpol this morning. She is very sleepy and unhappy. And keeps tapping her head so I think she has a headache. Cold hands and feet. No other signs of any illness- no cold, cough or rash, or sickness bug (she is only ever sick when her temp spikes) She is drinking water, WWYD?

Fruit box - that's exactly what I'm saying - get a second opinion. Not diagnosing at all.

From my NHS childhood illness booklet, the page on meningitis: if any of the signs are present call a doctor: fever, cold hand and feet, so I don't think it's alarmist to say these are symptoms of meningitis.

outputgap · 27/12/2016 09:03

Op, how is your child today? Hope it was just a virus.

hanban89 · 27/12/2016 13:21

Still high temp that went up to 39.4 during the night, 38 just now, but she is drinking and eating a little today. Still sleepy and pale looking but is playing a little so definitely an improvement. And wet nappies.
Our docs are back open today but I don't think we need an appointment for the moment as long as she keeps drinking.
Thanks for everyone's replies. I really appreciate it.

Op is that a temp of 38/39.4 despite being on calpol/ibuprofen? If so, please please take her back to a dr for a second opinion.

Taking her back. No urine this avo. Has been asleep for a couple hours. 38.5 in one ear and 39 in the other, and she is breathing fast. Not eating or drinking. I think this is the first time I've ever worried as she's never been this ill before.

Are you going back to a&e? I think that's the right choice, even if it turns out to be virus/nothing of concern you are completely doing the right thing.

hanban89 · 27/12/2016 19:49

Yep heading to A&E. 111 sent us.

Have just left hospital with my poorly dd so I hope yours gets better very soon OP.

CoperCabana · 27/12/2016 20:02

Oh gosh. Hope you get seen quickly and she is soon on the mend. I was coming on to say cold hands and feet is a red flag but seen things have moved on.

IwillrunIwillfly · 27/12/2016 20:06

Hope you get sorted out soon op.worth getting a urine sample checked incase its a uti. You're prob already there but if not get some sugary juice and give her 5 mls every 5 mins to try and get some fluid in her.

CoperCabana · 27/12/2016 20:13

Checkers we used to talk a few years back on the Drunk Thread I believe. I have nc'd since. Sorry to hear your DD has been so poorly. Hopefully on the mend now.

Starsandcars9 · 27/12/2016 20:42

Hope she's ok. Hopefully she's just a bit dehydrated so once they can rehydrate her and bring her temp down she'll be much better. Fingers crossed. You're in right place anyway.

hanban89 · 27/12/2016 23:09

Ok we are back from A&E and she's tucked up in bed. When we got there they did all the checks so again ears, chest and throat seem fine, but high temp and a rash that didn't go away with the glass test. She was also crying saying her tummy hurt. The nurse gave her quite a big dose of paracetamol and neurofen. We didn't see a doctor until about 1and a half hours later by which time the medicine had kicked in and her temp was normal and she was sitting sipping water quite happy, so have been sent home being told it's viral and it's a viral rash. She has never said her tummy hurt before but I'll keep an eye on her in case it is a UTI. I actually think she done a pee and it was nipping as she was trying to pull her nappy off. I told them that but as she was walking about quite happy they weren't worried. I'm hoping that medicine keeps her temp down for the night so she can get a good sleep.
Thanks everyone. Honestly I've never seen her so ill so maybe I'm just a bit panicky. At least GPs are back open normally now so I can take her in if she says about her tummy again with a urine sample.

Tummy can hurt due to glands. I would keep a close eye with a non blanching rash. If any floopyness or change i would go back to a and e. Hope all is well soon.

Itscurtainsforyou · 28/12/2016 00:45

Thanks for the update, pleased they've not found anything worrying, but sounds like you need to watch her closely for a while. Hope she makes a quick recovery, but definitely take her straight back if not.

Starsandcars9 · 28/12/2016 10:46

That's good but yes just watch her and follow your instinct. You aren't panicky at all and never be afraid to take her back - I went back 6 times to a and e once before they diagnosed my baby (she had bronchiolitus but due to a floppy larynx which was undiagnosed she only struggled in her sleep - I would take her saying she couldn't breath but then due to being in a and e she would wake up and seem much better but then we'd go back home she'd go to sleep again and then her larynx would relax and she'd struggle again!). You know your child best.

hanban89 · 28/12/2016 23:42

Thankfully no doctors tonight. No temp all day but very tired and grumpy, and has a rash all over that looks like itchy bumps that is bothering her. I've given some piriton and hopefully she is better tomorrow. Thankfully it's definitely viral but just been a nasty one. Thanks for everyone's advice. Much appreciated.
And stars that sounds scary! But yes definitely need to follow our instincts!
