Throat anxiety?

My 5 yr old ds has for the past year or so had a fear of people choking. If anyone coughs significantly he worries and if they cough whilst eating he gets very upset and anxious even if its a general clear of the throat type cough. Recently though he has had a cold and had the need to clear his throat as otherwise is quite croaky but he completely freaks out about this and gets extremely upset. It is a nightmare in the morning particularly and yesterday had such a meltdown he ended up staying off school. This makes him very teary and anxious and he has become quite clingy. He has been to gp in past about his throat and they said he has quite large tonsils but that he will grown into them and nothing else untoward. Has anyone else experienced this?
