Perforated Ear drum on a Sunday

Hello,

Not sure what to do my 18mth old was so unwell yesterday (cried non stop for several hours, temperature, awful cough), I took her to our local minor injuries and they said probably mix of virus and teething.

So we calpol and brofen her alternatively and she had a dreadful nights sleep, crying for most of it. When we woke for the morning it was clear her ear drum has burst, fluid oozing out. However, she seems so much better in herself today and not got a temp, no pain relief necessary.

I cant get through to nhs direct, it's ok to wait until tomorrow for gp appointment isn't it??

Just looking for reassurance as the ear looks dreadful....really want to suction it out!

If she had a middle ear infection then the eardrum bursting has probably relieved the pressure & the pain.

They usually clear up by themselves.

Did no-one at the minor injuries unit look inside her ears?

Pooka · 04/12/2016 14:59

Yes definitely ok to leave until tomorrow.

Sweet divine mother. Dd had this and was prescribed antibiotics. I'd be ringing 111,really.I wouldn't take chances with ears.

Perforated ear drums tend to be less painful once they "go" as the pressure is relieved. Unless it gets infected it should clear up on its own so calpol and cuddles should be enough.

Great, thanks for the swift replies!

Yes, they looked in her ears and said they were slightly inflamed, but nothing to worry about, but obviously it hadn't burst at that point. Poor little love was in agony, it popping has obviously relieved the pressure.

When ds's burst they swab and give him antibiotics.

yes I think it will be OK. Once they have burst the pain is gone.
Take her tomorrow to be checked and get advice.
