Ds1 can't sleep because his ear hurts. Crying which he never does. He has been swimming with school today which he does weekly, possibly related or not likely?? He's got a cough he's had for the last week. I have given calpol, any other suggestions to help out this evening??

Hi I haven't got any answers I'm afraid but I'm here at 02.30 because my 4 year old is awake with the same problem and I've been trying to find a solution. She was checked today at the Drs and has no infection - not even any reddening but is crying out in pain and won't sleep. I've given calpol and a hot water bottle which has helped slightly. Next time I will heat some porridge oats in a sock as suggested on here which is probably safer than water. I imagine the water has caused your sons problems. In the US they have something called swimmers drops so maybe you could explore what's in those and see if that works. I was actually looking to see if anyone had used apple cider vinegar as I've read a few posts online about it as a natural remedy. I would try it if it was for myself but am nervous in case it makes the situation worse. Good luck - hopefully it was a one off.

I had a raging ear infection when I was pregnant - we used warm olive oil dropped into my ear to relieve the pain. It really worked. Might just help tonight. I'd also try nurofen if you have any. My daughter used to get very painful ear infections and nurofen was the only thing that touched it.
