4yo with low temp? Feels clammy

My 4yo has had a bit of a sniffle and a cough for a few days, last night he had a raised temp of about 38/39 but this reduced when I gave him calpol for his sore throat. He's been ok all day, had some more calpol before bed but I've just checked his temp and it's 35.6 and he's sweating. I changed his pjs so he wasn't in a damp bed, added an extra blanket and left him for 20 mins or so, when I've checked again he's been sweating and his temp is still 35.6.

He's always struggled with high temps so this is something totally out of the ordinary for him, should I be worried or doing something more?

Have you taken the temperature in both ears? I would ring 111

Tbh I sometimes noticed that fever meds can have an effect of lowering the temp below 'normal' body temp. I also have noticed sweating when fever comes down. So I wouldn't be too alarmed but yes, why not give 111 a call and/ or observe him for a bit.

Have you tested your thermometer on yourself to check it is working?

If you get a normal reading for yourself then I would take him to A&E. A very low temperature is one sign of a serious infection and possibly sepsis.

Yes, but it also depends on the child's normal body temperature. For example, my DS's seems to be in the 35-36 range, while DD and I are around 36.6. I've definitely seen both mine and Dd's temp sometimes go down to 35.9 after fever meds. I don't think there's any reason to make the OP panic, tbh, especially if the child is ok in himself ( rousable, compos mentis, no stiff neck etc). But do call 111 if you're worried, obv.

What is significant here is the history of a cough for several days, then spiking a fever last night followed by low temperature and sweating tonight. I am not trying to make the OP panic, but I have seen children with far less symptoms/history ending up being treated for an infection and sepsis. Surely it is worth getting him seen just in case.

111 will refer to A&E if they are at all concerned about the child based on the history so the OP can call 111 for an assessment initially.

Yes, agree with calling 111, just thought taking him to A&E might be a bit of an overreaction if he's well otherwise.

Ds tends to drop low, sometimes very low, after he's had a temperature and he's had calpol or something to bring it down. Going from 38.5 down to 34.5 is usual.
But it's typical for him, so it doesn't worry me.
If it's not typical for your dc then I would get it checked out.
What I do is make sure he has had plenty of fluids and is wrapped up warm, often against me.

Thanks for all of the advice when I posted this, it was all very helpful. I ended up bringing him into my bed and cuddling him up, his temp got back up to 36.6 and I just kept my eye on him. I was going to give it another hour and then call 111 as a low temp definitely wasn't usual for him and I would have if it hadn't improved.
