Lump in toddlers groin...

Hi everyone,

I took my son to the doctors yesterday as I noticed a lump in his groin. Marble size. He has had a cough and cold this week and a sickness bug a few weeks ago so I thought perhaps a swollen lymph node. But she has referred him for an ultrasound.

Should I be worried? I'm trying to stay calm.

Also any idea how they will carry out the ultrasound? It was a struggle just for the doctor to examine him yesterday as he was crying, rolling and climbing up me. He will he 2 next month.

My son had this, noticed it when he would lay down to have his nappy changed. GP said it's normal, just glands, and would be less prominant as he grows up.

My other son had to have a hip ultrasound but was much younger so did just lay there. I feel for you because he's old enough to understand but not old enough to reason with!!

My son with the lumpy groin also had, what we thought, was an undescended testical, he howled and curled up when GP tried to examine him! Was awful and he was about 3.5 then! About 6m later we saw a consultant and he laid lovely and still for her, she was awesome to be fair, really fab manner with children. But in that 6m leading up to it, we'd regularly talk to him about what was going to happen, even played doctors and nurses and got him to lay down etc examine him.

Thank you HolaWeenie. I hope we will be told after the ultrasound that it is nothing to worry about. Exactly lol he will not be reasoned with! Hopefully they will have ways of being able to still do it on a wriggling toddler. A friend has said to be they may use a sedation but I doubt it for an ultrasound. I wouldn't want him to be unnecessarily. Thank you so much.x

My son had an ultrasound for a gland in his neck. They just measure it. I was worried sick but shouldn't have been as all was fine.
Btw, I used to have loads of marble sized glands in my groin as a kid. My kids probably do too, I just don't feel/look too often as I'm prone to worrying!

Could it be a hernia?

I'm usually quite calm but I noticed it when changing his nappy and it seemed quite big then I monitored it for a few days and it remained the same.

Thank you Littlefish I hadn't realised young children could get hernias. Hopefully he won't need an op of any kind! X

I was going to say inguinal hernia. Ds has just been diagnosed with his 2nd and they present as you describe. The scan should tell you more.

Ds has had one op and is on the waiting list for another. Surgery was worrying when he was 3 but it was a 45min op and he was back to his normal self 24 hrs later and raring to get back to pre school. No complications at all.
