Chicken pox or eczema?! Anyone had similar?

My DS had spots develop on his legs 5 days ago. There were lots all over his bottom and legs, particularly the back of his legs. Saw the doc the next day who took one (very quick) look and said chicken pox. He was his happy self and the doc said he will get worse.

Fast forward a few days and i wasn't convinced. They hadn't spread further, he hadn't been unwell nor was he itching. Went back for a second opinion and second doc said it is eczema.

They are still on his legs but have now darkened and gone hard. No itching and no fever. No one he has been in contact with has chicken pox either.

So confused as to what it is. I've never heard of eczema like this and can't find much info online. Something must have triggered it?

Has anyone experienced similar?

Hand foot and mouth can affect the bottom too. Maybe it's that rather than chicken pox

There are a couple of types of eczema that can look like that. I am not an expert but my son had similar almost like holes into the skin but looked poxy. It turned out to be a severe eczema infection needing antibiotics. He had it twice and it was very hard as spread all over. Some can be a herpes type infection.

My son suffered for years but now aged 14 is clear thabks to an amazing specialist and UVB therapy.

My son's infected eczema

Thank you AutumnColours9 - I don't really know much about eczema and never thought it could be in this form. Any idea of the name of this type of eczema?
Why did your son need the antibiotics? Were they affecting him?
I don't know whether to leave it (its not bothering him) or book a 3rd appointment
Thanks!

My son was extremely irritable with it and very sore. It was very angry and red and he had a slight temp. Once it got to that stage they said he needed antibiotics because it can get very serious.

I am not sure of the proper name of it sorry, they always just said severe eczema infection on his record. For us it was the discomfort and irritability that signalled the infection. Also it spread to the entire body.

It did look chicken poxy but the blisters turned into cuts/lumps/ 'holes' rather than fluid filled blisters. It is very hard to describe.

Hope it clears up soon!
