Protective cover for plastered leg?

DS (11) has fractured his ankle and it was put in a plaster cast this morning and will need to keep it for at least 2 weeks. The hospital recommended a website where I could buy a waterproof cover for use in the shower/bath.

Just wondering if I should get another one - or something similar - for him to put on when he goes outside. Otherwise it's going to be pretty grim isn't it? And what about cold toes?

Two things to consider. I am fairly over-concerned with hygiene related stuff. Also, I am very skint so wonder if there is something I can come up with myself.

When you/your dc have had leg in plaster, what did you do?

Is he allowed to walk on the cast?

Poor DS! I am at the moment sporting a very fetching plaster cast after breaking my ankle in the worlds most boring accident. I am also suffering with cold toes so I've just wrapped a scarf around there. You can buy these toe cosy things of amazon. Also look into hiring a scooter thing from www.strideon.co.uk this thing has just been so amazing and given me some independence. Have you got the waterproof cover so he can shower?

He can't put any weight on it at the moment and is using crutches. But still... he'll probably go back to school on Monday. The thought of wearing it out and about every day and then having to sleep in it...it's gross, no?

Lol I had the same cast on for two months. Two weeks will be fine. Get yourself to primark and buy him some big fluffy socks. He might need a size bigger although I was fine with my size. They generally aren't very tight/fitted so should be fine. There isn't really much else you can do.

startingtolooklikemother commiserations! I was trying to keep this low budget but...the scooter does look really good! He is at secondary school so will need to change classes every lesson. I can't afford it myself but my dad has asked if there is anything we need...I don't like to ask for anything, but if it's really helpful then I think it will be worth it.

I am about to order a waterproof sock from Limbo CMOTDibbler and just wondered if I should get outdoor sock but...it's pretty expensive and DS wants his bright green plaster on show so everyone can sign it!

Yes it's only 2 weeks so...am vacillating towards keeping it cheap and simple, and just getting a waterproof sock or swallowing my pride, asking my parents for help and getting him a whizz about scooter and outdoor sock.

I wouldn't spend all that money for one outdoor sock if he is only going to be in a cast for two weeks. By the time it gets here he could be ready to get his cast off :) if he was going to be in it for a while then yeah but honestly those cheap socks are fine. If he doesn't want the fluffy ones (I just found they weren't tight like regular socks) then maybe just regular socks in a bigger size as his toes will probably get pretty cold m, especially this time of year

2 weeks isn't that long for a cast to be on, (ds has brittle bones so breaks a lot) this summer we bought him a limbo cast cover so he could 'swim' in his arm cast which kept him happy!

An ankle cast should be ok uncovered for 2 weeks or wear a large sock over the top to keep it a bit cleaner. Most of ds's casts are on for 6 weeks by which time they are really grim!!!

Got a cover from Pimp my cast in the summer when dd1 broke her leg. Was almost sorry she didn't have it on longer, it looked great! (I am kidding, poor little mite).

Paulat2112 yep you're right, I'm not going to bother with the outdoor sock. I'll just get buy a pair of big size socks and use those.

Now the question is, scooter or not scooter? Like startingtolooklikemother suggested?

I don't have a car, but the school is nearby, just a few minutes walk. Then there is all the going to/from lessons. It would make life a lot easier for him as anyone using crutches will know - bloody exhausting to use.

My 12 year old would rather crawl than use a scooter thing. He's not 80

Crutches do the job don't get me wrong but they are exhausting to use plus you can't hold anything ever. With my little scooter I can make a drink and carry it, it gives me some kind of independence as I can go round the shops and stuff by myself. I think I'm paying £20 per week and wouldn't be without it at all plus it's brilliant going downhills

DS has been in a fixator followed by a cast for 10months and we haven't bothered buying anything special. He showers sat in it with the door open and his leg poking out the door. Big sock to keep his toes warm. The 2 weeks will whizz by.

Would love to know how you found out about StrideOn. And also although we're a bit late to the conversation we sell Cast Protectors for the shower just so you know. Thanks for mentioning us here ;)
