I took my then 18 month old to the docs and they confirmed that her odd behaviour (lying on the floor huffing and puffing) as Gratification Disorder (infantile masturbation). It is definitely a relief that it isn't anything serious, however, how does one explain this to grandparents!?? Any ideas? It seems a bit more accepted for a boy but not so much for a girl.

I know a little girl who used to do this in nursery....she used to rock herself on the edge of the chair.
She grew out of it by the time she was starting Primary at 4 years old.

No advice though I'm afraid.

A great resource about appropriate sexualised behaviours is the "Brook traffic light tool", google it and it'll come straight up.
By looking at the tool you can identify appropriate vs harmful behaviours. Could be good to refer to when you are explaining that it is normal... good luck x

Sorry OP, just to clarify I wasn't reporting your post! It was the two posters (who I suspect were the same person) below yours who have been trolling on different threads all night, with similarly repulsive and inappropriate "advice".

Society is so irritating how it's seen as normal and healthy for boys but not girls !!! My daughter has actual. Made a hole in her pj bottoms and they are a week old.Im sure it's related to this! She is 6. I'm not concerned I'd have thought this is relatively normal. I didn't do it but I'm sure other kids do !

I have a daughter who is 3 and a half years old, and for some time now I have noticed that she has been rubbing herself against her teddy bear. I was afraid of her doing this in front of other people, but I noticed that she only does it when she has the teddy bear with her, so I try not to take it with me when I go out with her.

I had this following the birth of child no 2. Just pick him up and distract him if he does it in company, but dont worry about it in private. I would try to minimise it happening as it can be quite habit forming.

As I said, I noticed that she only does it when she is with the teddy bear, so I only leave it with her when we are at home, but I have never said anything to her, I have never criticized her or said anything rude to her, I just leave her quiet and do it.

A teacher friend has had children in reception masturbating against chairs.

My dd did this in the bath when she was about 2.

I ignored it and didn’t pay any attention. She outgrew it pretty quick

I (female) remember humping the couch a LOT as a young child. I turned out fine! My parents never shamed me and I didn’t do it in public as far as I know!

A girl in DS's primary school did this (started at nursery) and was still doing so in year 6. She was exceptionally advanced academically but struggled to make friends.

Sexuality is very surprising, I once read an article that said that it was seen through ultrasound that a fetus used his hands to manipulate his genitals, soon after calming down, why are some children different from others? How come some have their sexuality more accentuated than others?

Sometimes people who are arriving have their doubts and questions, and if some think they are more knowledgeable about the issues, why do they waste their time in answering then? They don't add anything. Don't waste your time, move on ....
