Moles

My DD is 7 and has had a mole in her foot for about as long as I can remember, it started of fairly small and it has now grown. I took her to the gp yesterday who is referring her to a dermatologist. The mole is on the sole of her foot and he has said he doesn't think it could be anything serious due to it not being exposed to sun and her age. I'm worried sick (obviously) and was just looking for some reassurance and if anyone has any experience I can post a picture of the mole of anyone wishes to see it.

Dd had a lump that popped up on her arm a few months ago from absolutely nowhere, one day there was nothing, the next a weird skin coloured lump. We thought it was chicken pox (as it was going round at the time) but it isn't. She's been to gp, as sometimes it itches and catches which makes it bleed. They said to keep an eye on it. I'm thinking of taking her back and asking for a referral to see a dermatologist (even more so now after reading your post) it's on her forearm so gets a lot of sun.

I have something very similar on my arm to your DD. Mine used to itch and then id scratch it until it bled and it slowly reduced in size and is now a skin coloured bump. (I've had it years and the gp couldn't tell me what it was). I'd go get it checked again and ask for a referral. You can never be to careful with these things and from past experience some gps can be to quick to Fob you off!

It's good your gp has taken your concerns seriously and you've got a referral though. Good luck for when she is seen
I should have taken her back to see the gp during the summer holidays, trust me to leave it til they go back!

bigfam my daughter had something similar on her face. It was diagnosed as a Pyogenic granuloma (totally benign but unsightly, especially on her face!) and it was removed by shave excision.

The lab examined it and it turned out not to be a Pyogenic granuloma after all! It was a spitz naevus (again, totally harmless, just a type of mole.) it started to grow back almost as soon as it was removed and so they removed it again, this time excising the whole thing rather than just shaving it off. It has left a small scar but far better than a big unsightly lump,on her cheek!

I would definitely ask for a dermatologist referral. My daughter's lump appeared almost over night and grew rapidly. You may not be bothered about having it removed as its on her arm, not on her face like my daughters was, but I think you'd feel reassured to have it identified.

Thankyou Bigfam and good luck for your daughter too. Hope you get the referral. I wish I'd of sorted this out at the beginning of the holidays too, I'm always leaving everything until the last minute!

OP my daughter has something very similar. A brown mole on her toe which appeared in July. She chose to not tell me about it until the day before we were going on holiday. The GP has referred us to see a dermatologist under the two week maximum wait.
I'm nervous but thinking positively at the moment.

That looks almost identical to one that of one my girls (can't remember which one ) has on their foot. They got it just before their 6 week check and it's absolutely fine.

It's worth getting large moles in kids checked, particularly if they are changing. But people and kids do have moles, and they're mostly a completely normal phenomenon. You can also get atypical moles that look scary, but are equally harmless. But I think given the size, it's asymmetry and non-uniform colour it's well worth getting a specialist to look at it, if only to put your mind to rest. Based on the picture it looks to me like just an atypical mole, but the dermatologist will be able to have a proper look under magnification.
