DD 2.5 complaining her neck hurts.

DD2 is usually in good health, not a complainer. Slept well last night, has eaten breakfast and a bottle of milk, started complaining back of her neck hurts. Have her some neurofen and she perked up.

Just has to run DD1 to station and DD went to sleep in car. Never stays asleep when I get her out of cat but she was out for the count. Is now sound asleep on sofa, can't see any rash but she's quite hot (aren't we all!) She's also quite pale.

Should I get her looked at or just keep my eye on her? It may be she's slept weirdly or might be something sinister (meningitis am worried about).

Would there be other symptoms or is her saying her neck hurts and being sleepy enough to get her seen urgently??

She's booked in for meningitis vaccine next month as I'm terrified of her getting it.

Just spoke to doctors and they don't seem too concerned, said a lot going round at the moment and to leave her to sleep. Check she doesn't start getting a rash and take her in later if she goes down hill.

Keep a careful eye. If she is difficult to rouse or develops a sensitivity to light or a non blanching rash then seek urgent help.

Thank you. Bloody cuckoo clock went off and woke her. She seems brighter so probably just me panicking.

Have cancelled this afternoons childcare (packing will have to wait) I'll sit with her for rest of day, have striped her off so I can see if she start getting a rash.

The rash is a late symptom so don't wait for that. Look at the rest of her symptoms and make a decision. Sounds like she's on the mend though.

Thank you llhj, she eating wotsits and chatting away so maybe it was sleeping funny and the heat. Will be hyper vigilant now though. She's my third child and I panic far more with her than the others.

I think I'd say trust your instincts. Sometimes the rash never comes at all. You know your child best. Glad to see she's perking up.

Agree trust your instincts. I rang cue doc when DD was feeling feverish and sick. Complained of stiff neck and preferred the light off. Three unusual spots. GP (not know to us,different practise) told me to bring her down in a couple of hours. I couldn't believe it. I got her stuff ready and took her (20mins) she walked to the car , was vomiting on the way in and when I got there she couldn't walk. The GPs driver lifted her for me. I told the nurse unless the GP would see her immediately then I would go to hospital. He saw her next and got a shock sent me straight to hospital. They were ready and waiting when I got there. She had meningitis. She was in hospital for five or six days.
My niece had it years later came down with it from being grumpy/ drowsy at lunchtime to rash over body at 10 pm. The local hospital kept her instead of sending her to large hospital 30 hours later when they sent to major hospital she was on life support. She was on the edge of death for a month I was with her for three weeks. She had 24 hr care from doctors and lived. I tell everyone insist, trust your instincts. Better safe than sorry.

So glad she is looking better but yes just be vigilant.

My son had it too but he was older and able to shake it off. We are a susceptible family and we have been included in a study.

Hello! I am glad your daughter has perked up a little but just to be safe i thought I'd chip in my two pence worth. Even if she's better have a good feel around her neck shoulders and underarms. Check for any lumps or slight swellings. I'm not trying to frighten you but it is so important to check if a child complains of pain in these places and feels sleepy. It is most likel just the heat. I wish it had been with my son. He was complaining of sore neck/ back shoulders. He was pale and tired. I took him to the doctor so many times to be told it was viral. Only after 4 months (4 friggin months) of him vomitting almost daily did the dr investigate further. He has advanced hodgkins lymphoma. The last thing i ever expected to hear. Currently on month 3 of chemo, 7 hours away from home since that day. I can't help but think if I had put my foot down with dr it wouldn't have got to this advanced stage. I'm not saying for one second that this is a possibility for you. Just that everyone should know the symptoms of childhood cancers and us mummies should always follow our gut instincts ❤

Thank you Lolabella, I'm so sorry that your going through that with your son. It's terrible that it wasn't picked up earlier and a testament to your perseverance that you finally got a diagnosis. I really hope the chemo is working and he will be cancer fee soon. I can't imagine how desperate of a time you have had.
