Screaming when peeing

I've posted in potty training but thinking this may be something else

My daughter is 2 years 8 months and has been screaming when she wees, but not every time. She gets really distressed and it's terrible. We saw a nurse today and her urine sample was fine but has been sent to the lab and we have follow up on Thursday. The nurse found nothing wrong with her.

She is drinking lots more than normal, as soon as I refill her cup she has drunk it all.

Is it in her head? Does she not want to let her wee go??

Anyone have any ideas??

How is she weeing? In a nappy or a potty?

If it were me I'd have a super long bath session after a big drink and see if she is better in the bath. If it was something like cystitis I think she would find it easier in the bath and stings less.

Try and avoid purple juice (they say to avoid it for bed wetting so I assume it stimulates the bladder somehow)

Maybe something like Bepanthen on her bits? If she has any cuts it would help stinginh

To start with she was in a nappy but she kept grabbing herself and screaming so I tried her on the potty and she still screams. She doesn't like having a nappy or pants on but she still screams with nothing on when she wee's on the floor.

She won't sit in the bath, she stands and we have to pour water over her with a jug.
She will only drink strawberry squash, water or milk, should I stop the squash??

Was she checked for diabetes?
If she's drinking loads more it might be worth checking...it can cause thrush too which might be sore ab explain the discomfort? It probably isn't but might just be worth checking.

She wasn't checked for diabetes, will ask about that on Thursday. The nurse did check for thrush but she was clear of that too.

Her urines really clear so I was a bit worried, but she was downing her drinks so maybe that's why?

I suffer co Stanton and regular cystitis due to a biological defect, it's horrible but if I have really dilute pee because I've drunk about a gallon of water it fails the dip test and only small amounts are found in the lab. Try and catch her fmu if you can.

I'd giver her some ibuprofen as well, if there is inflammation of the urethra it might give her a bit of relief.

She's been like this for a couple of weeks on and off. Tonight she's only cried once but filled 2 nappies.

She doesn't have the usual high temp that goes with an infection. She had one at 10 months and had to stay overnight in paeds to have fluids as she had thrush in her mouth as well so refused to drink.

I will try and get another sample on Thursday before she sees the dr

We only have calpol in the house, would ibuprofen be better?? I live opposite a chemist so will get some in the morning

Does she have any sores down there? Had any trauma to the area? (Ran into a table corner & banged herself?) And have you checked for worms at night/in nappies? Thrush or rash on the inside of the labia?

Does your family have any kidney problems/ history of kidney stones?

It could be psychogenic, a surprising number of kids get issues around toileting, some resolve in days, some just snap out of it & others it can take years but it might be worth seeing if your HV or GP can refer to a Paediatric Department now so it can get the ball rolling if it continues so she can be assessed & referred on.

Bless her! I feel for you too, must be hard seeing her go through that.

YY to PP who said diluted wee might not show up much too!

My 3 yo has had similar symptoms, well in herself, no temp or anything but complaining her vulva was sore and it was hurting to have a wee. After a few days it got worse and on Sunday night last week she woke several times crying and I had to give her calpol and ibuprofen and use sudocrem on it to settle her. I took her to the GP and they couldn't find anything in her sample but gave us some cream thinking it might be thrush and sent the sample off 'just in case'. Got a call a few days later to say she does have a uti and is now on antibiotics and symptoms seem to be improving. Hope your DD is better soon

You can give calpol, but it's just a painkiller and downy help with inflammation like ibuprofen will. When a uti is in the urethra it can become red and swollen, so whilst calpol may take the edge off ibuprofen will help reduce the swelling.

I personally take 400mg of ibuprofen and 1000mg of paracetamol when I feel the onset of one. If it gets really bad I have codeine in the house off GP to supplement with. I also don't get a temperature or any other symptoms just stomach cramps and feel like I'm peeing glass.

Try the calpol of its all you have, it might help, and it won't harm her if it downy help much.

I was born with a urethra that is technically too short, it took till I was 19 to diagnose it.

I'll now always get a uti after intercourse regardless of if I pee before or after and I can't have hot baths, it triggers them! It can become a bit of a nightmare lol but then there are worse issues out there I could have I suppose!

She's not had any bumps/bangs to that area as far as I know. She doesn't have thrush or any sores/cuts, the nurse double checked for me. As far as I know she doesn't have worms.

Yesterday she cried a couple of times when she wee'd, she's crying on the potty now as she needs to go and I need a sample for the dr later.

She sits on our legs and rocks back and forth, like she has an itch? But there's nothing there.

I think it may be in her head and she doesn't like the feeling of letting her wee go, but I want the dr to rule every possibility out first just in case.

Will she wee if you poor warm water over her so she can "let go" without feeling the sensation?

Does she have other sensory issues?

Why have you seen a nurse and not a doctor. Insist on an appointment with the GP and if there is still no simple and straightforward explanation, insist on a referral to a paediatrician.

Does it get worse at night? I have heard of threadworms being painful for some people.

I haven't tried the warm water no, will try that later on.

She has finally pee'd with a lot of screaming and hugs, and it's clear again. This was her first wee after taking her night nappy off at 7.

We're seeing a dr today, we saw a nurse at urgent care (what are surgery does if not Drs available) on Tuesday. Lab results will be back and if no infection hopefully the dr has an idea of what it could be.

She's fine at night, no screaming at all. Wakes for a drink once or twice then she's back to sleep. There are no signs of worms, she's had them before and it was horrid.

That urine looks very diluted for a first wee of the day. I'd want diabetes excluded and a referral if things persist.

Yes she has wet nappies in the morning and can pee while sleeping with no problem. She can wee in a nappy during the day without crying sometimes too.

It's not every wee she cries at.

So the nurse at urgent care booked today's appointment at a different surgery but told me it was at my usual. Just wasted 40 minutes waiting!

They couldn't fit us in until 10am tomorrow.

So annoyed, with them and with me. I should have demanded one then and there but she was restless and kept crying and my son was really bored.

I am seeing a brilliant doctor tomorrow though.

Well that went well(!)

Doctor refused to examine her at all, as the nurse had on Tuesday. Lab results weren't back either. He said because the dip test was clear she hasn't got an infection in that sample so have me a pot and forms so I can get another.

Oh and he told me to put nappy cream on her.
