Hand foot and mouth?

A child at dds preschool was diagnosed with hand foot and mouth. I don't think the child was there yesterday but there was an announcement on the board telling us. I was just wondering how easy it would be for children to pass it on? Do you think dd could be affected or is it unlikely? How long will it take before any symptoms show?

Know nothing about how long before symptoms show etc but I do know that it's very contagious!

Paediatric nurse suggested my eldest had it (because I wouldn't have been sure about what it was myself) and it was very mild, didn't bother her much at all. And coincidental blood tests on dc2 suggested that he also had it, but symptomlessly.

So even if your dc get it, it can be very mild.

One of my dd had it through nursery. It was mild - I can't even remember the symptoms!

She hasn't been eating much lately and seems very tired (woke up later than usual this morning) but nothing has appeared yet. I hope shes managed to escape without catching it, wouldn't be a very good start to the holidays

I remember having hand foot and mouth. It isn't nice (so totally disagree with posters who say it isn't painful!). Hands and feet weren't bad, but the blisters in the mouth were. Ice cream was bliss, anything else awful. Presumably it's like lots of these things, and maybe it was a particularly bad strain going round? Hope she doesn't get it OP.

I caught it from DD - could barely walk as the foot blisters were so painful! She just got a few in her mouth, I got it worse, but a few weeks later her nails came off which is apparently connected to it.

Im worried about her getting blisters in her mouth, i know how sore one ulcer can be. She has a small red mark on her cheek but i think its a scratch (thats what im hoping it is anyway)

I think my nearly 2 year old DD has this now. A few days ago she started crying when eating saying her teeth hurt, then she got a rash over her bottom, backs of her legs and tops of her feet. This wasn't nothing here though. Today its spread to the tops of her arms and she still complains of her teeth hurting. I managed briefly to look in her mouth tonight (she very guarded at the moment) and I'm sure I've seen a rash or blisters on the roof of her mouth. Tonight I've so far been to her twice as she keeps waking crying.

From research you are most infectious before the symptoms come out. The rash my DD has isn't typical as so far there is nothing on her palms or bottom of her feet but it is known to be on bottoms and backs of legs although not so common.

She does have a bit of a spotty bum (but i put that down to nappy rash, it hasn't been going away with creams) she's been really restless at night, she woke up last night holding her mouth whilst crying. I can't see anything in her mouth. She doesn't have a temp. The spot on her cheek is still there and hasnr scabbed over. I'm not so worried as she seems fine so far..

It is very contagious, can range from just a mild temp with no spots to feeling quite unwell with spots around nappy area, hands feet and mouth. It's just one of those things that kids get. I think the name makes it sound more dramatic than it often is. My 6 m/o dd got it and was unwell for a couple of days until spots appeared. None in her mouth but around all other areas. My other two dds were sick at the same time and one only had a temp and the other had two spots on chin. I then got it and felt like I was dying! I had to go on a plane journey a to a family funeral at the time. No spots at that point, I felt like I had the flu. Then I got spots on the palms of my hands and feet a day later and realised what I had.

She had a really high temp this weekend with one spot on her cheek, took her to out of hours but they wanted a urine sample and i just couldn't get one. She's a lot better today and she's managed some food but is still really grumpy. It has encouraged me to try potty training as she was able to hold it in for 2+hours...

My DS got it this spring but it was quite mild. DH caught it from him and had a rough two weeks. Very sore throat to the point of not being able to eat and painful blisters, he couldn't walk for a couple of days. DD and I never got it. I kept DS home from nursery and DH stayed indoors as well.

DD unfortunately had her settling in session at nursery last week on the same day they had an outbreak of it.
2 days later she got a temperature and was very restless. The following day the spots appeared.
By day 3 her temp was back to normal and she was eating and sleeping ok again. Day 4 now and she seems fine other than the spots which don't seem to have bothered her at all.
She starts nursery properly tomorrow and they said as long as any temperature and illness have gone they're fine to attend, the spots don't have to have gone.

She's fine now just grumpy but thats probably because she's tired. Children always seem to cope better with illnesses, they bounce back well.
