I know kids bump their heads all the time, but would you get this seen?

DS is 3. He ran into a table corner and now has a pretty big bump on his forehead. He is okay, but keeps saying he feels 'sicky'. So now I'm a little worried. The bump is quite big

Did he cry immediately after it happened? If he did (ie was not knocked unconscious) and hasn't actually been sick I would just keep an eye on him. Watch him carefully, make sure he's eating & drinking normally and not usually tired or drowsy. If you think he has a headache you can give calpol.

I would phone your gp or my local chemist has a minor injuries service that would give advise on this sort of thing, do you have anything like that?

DH is a dr and he always tells me rule of thumb is if the bump feels soft or squashy then you need to go straight to A&E. If the bump feels firm and solid then monitor them for signs of drowsiness or vomiting and if they have these symptoms then get them checked out. Hope that's helpful. For what it's worth he is ALWAYS happy to look over a child where the parent is concerned. It's not a waste of time.

My 5-year-old fell over on Saturday and hit his head rather hard on concrete. He wasn't knocked unconscious but he was dazed for about an hour. My dp took him to A&E because he had a very big bump on his head, and a deep-ish cut to boot. If not for this I would have kept him at home and kept an eye on him.

The advice they gave us, is the same as always. If the child wasn't knocked unconscious that is a good thing. If they are alert, awake and playing that is good. It is not unusual for a child who has hit their head to have a mild headache for a while. If they become sleepy and unrouseable - take them in.

When it comes to A&E it's definitely a last option, because so very often they pick up something worse just fro, being there than what they went in with.

I would just phone your doctor and maybe have a chat. It might be a very mild concussion but best be on safe side.
