So for instance, how long would the creature or the nit or egg or whatever, live on a hairbrush?

Quick google suggests not very long. About a day.

Something about your hair must keep them alive, which I find very creepy to think about!

36 hours once, in warm weather, on slightly damp tissue. Not hardy critters.
We've cleared the feckers many a time only by picking them off heads, didn't wash anything else.
