Worried about DS toenails

DS'S big toenails are always splitting horizontally and breaking - could this indicate other issues? I always keep them cut short to try and stop them breaking but they still do

I have heard a lack of protein in a diet can cause this. Does he eat much protein? Meat? Cheese etc?
