Children's health

Neurology consultant has phoned to request DD come in for an urgent MRI - worried!

DD (15) has been having pretty severe migraines over the past year or so. Last week we had an appointment with a neurology consultant at the children's hospital she seemed satisfied that DD was on the correct course of treatment now (with a minor tweak) and gave a formal diagnosis of severe migraine with aura and also tension headaches.

Today I got a phone call at work from the consultant we saw last week to say she had been discussing DDs case with a more senior colleague and they wanted to bring her in soon for an MRI as there was 'something in her auras that they are concerned about'

Was actually feeling really reassured after her appointment but now feeling really worried. Googling to try and find out which of her symptoms might be causing concern. Obviously now I've totally scared myself too.

The rational part of me is trying to be sensible and that it's better for everything to be checked thoroughly. The other part of me is panicked.

Realise there's nothing I can actually do, but just feeling really worried now Sad

great news for the scan

depending how laissez faire you are about meds....I have the same stuff, been on them about eight months now... but was just permanently out of breath, flat out exhausted on one a day so I take one on alternate days

feeling much brighter, and fitter and still no migraines.

I also grew out of mine for a bit, they caught up with me when pg with dd, no issues with either of the boys and they started to flare up again about four or five years ago, increasing in frequency to one or two a month which is why i went off to see the quack.

Thank you everyone so relieved! And the others at the meeting were really nice too!

I don't really want to change her meds just now while it seems to be working, due to the timing of her exams. 2 class based ones tomorrow then 8 formal exams in May but after those I would like to see if cutting the current dosage would still keep the migraines at bay.

Fantastic news. Good luck to your DD in her exams. Not sure if it's been mentioned, but it might be worth getting a letter from her consultant or GP about her migraines and the side effects of the medications for the exam boards?

Oops posted too soon.

I have been looking into the exam thing. We are in Scotland and DD is sitting Nat 5s and it seems unless you actually miss an exam on the day through illness there's nothing else that can be done/taken into account for exams in regards to illness/circumstances.

Hopefully she won't have to miss any exams due to migraines as her prelims were pretty disastrous due to them, so she doesn't really have much to fall back on. I think really this year will be a bit of a write off and hopefully next year will be better! Shamrock
